2018réf. 203688Sante Fe: Radius Books 2018. Hardcover. VG: Exlibrary book. Sticker at the base of the spine. Sticker on the front free end page. Two stickers on the back pasted end page. A matte hardcover book with the title in white down a busy yellow green blue and pink spine. Pages: 7 8-100 26. Profusely illustrated with color images including several foldout displays. "The culmination of a decade of work in the American West 'Signal Noise' presents an open-ended meditation on our desire to connect with the natural world and the limits of our abilities to do so. Photographs altered with unconventional digital processing ask us to reflect on the nature of individual perceptual experience and the impact of our collective presence in the landscape. The images in Signal Noise are rooted in Rothman's response to places familiar and meaningful to him but his interest lies in the transformative rather than the documentary nature of photography. Landscapes overtaken by digital noise layering erasure amplification and interference examine the blurry boundaries between natural and artificial between real and virtual and between the world and how we perceive it. Interspersed views of desert mountain vistas and dense forests made with fallibly perfect photographic clarity anchor the work in the space of the physical world while also casting doubt about what is real and what is a figment of photographic perceptual or human alteration." He also reveals a poetic sensibility: a desire shared by writers and poets to make visible our complicated inner worlds. He acknowledges the ambivalences we carry." Blow Up Harris' first retrospective monograph published on the occasion of his 2008 traveling exhibition which originated at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art features full-color reproductions from throughout his career: His "white face" self-portraits of the late 1980s his collage-based work of the mid-1990s and his more recent Polaroid self-portraits large-scale Blow Up collages and Ghana-based photographs. 1978Book is in excellent condition except for what appears to be a punch tool mark starting on page 145 and impacted to page 159, cutting a 1/4" x 1/2" rectangle; weird. Book is otherwise very clean with green cloth boards, gilt print at spine, decorative endpapers. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners with a bit of wear, exterior shows no other blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Dust jacket shows light signs of shelf wear, some chipping at the edges with a few very small tears, a scratch mark on the back. Book is lavishly illustrated with large b&w & color prints and photos throughout. Historical presentation of set and costume design as well as lots of very impressive designs of the "modern age." Contents include: Renaissance spectacle, From court to theatre, Rococo, neoclassical, romantic, The Diaghilev era, After Diaghilev, In Russia, Design for today, Traditional design, French style, Modern ballet and modern dance.
