1788réf. 816241788. Charges of Immorality and Fornication Against the Lord High Chancellor Cassandra. Thurlow Edward 1731-1806 1st Baron Thurlow. A Letter to the Bishop of London. Containing a Charge of Fornication Against Edward Lord Thurlow Lord High Chancellor of England. With His Lordship's de bene esse Defence. London: Printed for the Author; and Sold by Ridgway 1787. 50 pp. Octavo 8-1/4" x 5". Disbound stab-stitched pamphlet in later plain wrappers. Light soiling and edgewear to wrappers moderate toning to interior light foxing in a few places light soiling and faint offsetting to title page. $450. Only edition. Thurlow was a lawyer and Conservative politician who served as Lord High Chancellor for fourteen years. He was known not only for his loyalty to George III and skill in the courtroom but as the father of a number of illegitimate children. This wide-ranging polemic accuses him of fornication with a young woman named Mary Edmonds anticipates his defense and then moves on to a discussion of tax policy and the Test Acts. It draws on various classical biblical and legal authorities such as Blackstone to support its assertions. The pseudonym is likely a reference to the Cassandra of Greek mythology. The ESTC assigns this pamphlet a provisional date of 1788 but a contemporary review appeared in a 1787 issue of The Monthly Review describing it as a "strange.performance" but noting that the editors were certainly "much amused." "The culmination of a decade of work in the American West 'Signal Noise' presents an open-ended meditation on our desire to connect with the natural world and the limits of our abilities to do so. Photographs altered with unconventional digital processing ask us to reflect on the nature of individual perceptual experience and the impact of our collective presence in the landscape. The images in Signal Noise are rooted in Rothman's response to places familiar and meaningful to him but his interest lies in the transformative rather than the documentary nature of photography. Landscapes overtaken by digital noise layering erasure amplification and interference examine the blurry boundaries between natural and artificial between real and virtual and between the world and how we perceive it. Interspersed views of desert mountain vistas and dense forests made with fallibly perfect photographic clarity anchor the work in the space of the physical world while also casting doubt about what is real and what is a figment of photographic perceptual or human alteration." réf. 1246He writes "Dear Madam I was sorry not to see you in Paris before I left but I would have been even more sorry if you had shortened your vacation in Aix to be at that last meeting on the rue Lincoln. I left all necessary instructions first to your trusted Cabioch and then to Mrs. Joubert and I left town without any worry on the outcome of our current projects. I hope you were somehow entertained in Aix and that you will get some rest now in your small country house. For me I have settled down for the time being at the Mont d'Arbois above Niegeve. I hope I am able "to hold out" for at least ten days. Then I'll spend some time at the beach to try and get "a shot in the arm" somewhere around Le Touquet before going back to the rue de Bellechasse. Until then please trust dear Madam in my very friendly sympathy." He signs "A.M. Cassandre unknown books

Normandie and the mischievous humor of the Duibonnet advertisements. Nicolas founded in 1822 really changed the way the French drank wine it was this house that first sold table wine in bottles rather than casks making it easier for the average person to drink a glass of wine at home rather than in a tavern This wine merchant was very particular in the 1929s and 1930 in the choice of the illustrator used for promotional pieces in addition to Cassandre the firm insisted on the services of Van Dongen Bernard Buffet and Raoul Dufy among others.
