Suffering both physically and financially as the result of financial misfortune Grant began writing his autobiography in the fall of 1884 and finished in July of 1885 five days before his death. Samuel Clemens Mark Twain encouraged Grant and shepherded the book to publication through the Webster connection. Eagerly anticipated by a public that had been following Grant's illness in the press the book was an immediate success upon its release and has long been considered one of if not the best memoirs written by an American president. Since its publication it has received acclaim from literary figures including Twain and Gertrude Stein and from numerous modern American historians and political commentators from Eric Foner to Ta-Nehisi Coates. 1880réf. 104971880. Middlesex Club. Complimentary Dinner to Gen. U.S. Grant 1880 records a Boston Republican gathering honoring Ulysses S. Grant four months after his unsuccessful attempt to secure the Republican presidential nomination for an unprecedented third term. Grant had returned to the United States in December 1879 after more than two years of international travel and entered the 1880 Republican convention as a leading candidate. He received 304 votes on the first ballot and remained near that total through thirty six ballots before James A. Garfield emerged as the nominee receiving 399 votes on the final ballot. The October dinner therefore belongs to the closing weeks of the 1880 presidential campaign rather than to Grant's nomination effort itself. Complimentary Dinner to Gen. U.S. Grant by the Middlesex Club at the Brunswick Boston Oct. 13 1880. Middlesex Club. Boston 1880. 11 x 17 inches. Printed seating chart identifying the dinner attendees and assigning their positions at the tables preserving the names and physical arrangement of participants at the event. Rather than simply announcing the dinner the chart records the composition of a political gathering organized around the former president during a presidential election in which Grant's continued standing within the Republican Party remained conspicuous despite his defeat at the national convention. Held less than three weeks before the November 2 presidential election the dinner documents Grant's public prominence during the campaign that elected Garfield and Chester A. Arthur. The named seating assignments permit study of the individuals gathered around Grant in Boston and may support further investigation of Republican political networks in Massachusetts during the 1880 election. Excellent condition. A substantive piece of Grant and Republican Party ephemera that preserves the personnel and seating organization of a precisely dated political dinner. unknown books
réf. 415194Unbound. Near Fine. One legal folio folded at the top to make four pages. Old folds as filed soiling and small tears at the extremities of the folds very good or better. A certified handwritten copy prepared in March 1885 shortly before Grant's death of an 1880 contract between Grant and Lewis B. Brown of New York City. Signed by various clerks with one seal but NOT SIGNED BY GRANT. The document gives Grant ".forever a right of way to the Atlantic Ocean from Seabrook now Ocean Avenue over and upon the lot. and the privilege to erect a bathing house of moderate size upon the Shore of said Ocean. ." Presumably the "bathing house" was what we'd call a cabana. The document has been docketed and stamped in 1887 two years after Grant's death. Grant's shore house served as the Summer White House during his two terms from 1869-1877 obviously this right-of-way was issued after his term was over. unknown books

CONDITION: Very good front cover lightly scratched in two places minimal wear. First edition of this "one-thousand-eighty-two-page anthology that not only defined the field of African American literature as a legitimate academic discipline for the first time but by soberly assessing black authors 'without sentimental allowances' on an equal rather than separate basis 'served notice that the Negro author has come of age" Weinstein. Collects African American writers working across short stories novels poetry folk literature drama speeches biography and essays including works by Frederick Douglass Langston Hughes Chester Himes Charles W. Chesnutt Zora Neale Hurston Phillis Wheatley W. E. B. Du Bois Booker T. Washington Katherine Dunham and many others. The breadth of selection not only represents the range of Black writing but allows readers to "appreciate the evolution of black writing in style subject matter and theme in each genre not to mention having the sheer pleasure of reading works of which one had only heard or had never known existed" Lester. Most importantly this anthology presents a counternarrative to the dominant mode of Black representation-characterization by White persons and authors who "believed that "they knew blacks better than blacks knew themselves." As the editors state in their introduction this anthology claimed for African Americans "the responsibility of being the ultimate portrayers of their own."
