1866rif. 98961Washington D.C. May 5 1866. 1866. Very good. - Over 85 words penned in a secretarial hand on 2 pages of a 9-7/8 inch high by 7-3/4 inch wide "Treasury Department" stationery with an integral attached leaf. Hartley replies to Senator John Sherman of Ohio who has recommended Thomas Murdock Esq. for the position of Local Inspector of Steamboats at Cincinnati Ohio that "there is no vacancy in the District you desire Mr. Murdock to be appointed." Signed "John F. Hartley" as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury. Folded for mailing the document is docketed by Senator Sherman on the verso. There is a stain from a seal at the top inner corner of the integral leaf with a very small chip. Very good. John F. Hartley 1809-1897 served as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury from 1865 to 1875 under Presidents Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant. [Washington, D.C.], May 5, 1866.

1906rif. 43188Madison: State of Wisconsin 1906. Hardcover. 8vo. Green blind-embossed cloth. ix 100pp 3pp ads. Illustrations figures maps one large foldout. Very good. Binding a bit edgeworn and rubbed though internally tight and sharp; nonauthorial gift inscription on front pastedown. A tight and nice first edition of Bulletin No. XIV of the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey Economic Series No. 9. The partly-color 19" X 15" foldout "Geological Map of Grant Iowa and Lafayette Counties" is clean and handsome. The title-mentioned atlas is a separately published volume not present here. Not by the OTHER U.S. Grant who lived in the adjacent northwest Illinois county Jo Daviess but by the noted Northwestern University geology professor surely named in his and William T. Sherman's honor. State of Wisconsin hardcover
rif. 34228N.p.: N.p. n.y. Hardcover. Small 4to. Full green calf with gilt spine lettering. Pp. 681-696 rectos only. 12 steel engravings 1 map. Very good. Mildly edgeworn with spine and binding edges irregularlysunned to golden brown. Bibliographically cryptic but clearly relatively recent i.e. post-WW2 facsimile reprint of this 16-page extract from the May 1866 issue of "Harper's New Monthly Magazine" Vol. XXXII No. CXCII -- an article that follows up on U.S. Grant's postwar fame profiling the famed lead mining town in northwest Illinois that had become his home just prior to the Civil War. Front wrapper engraving depicts Galena's Main Street bulging with people assembled to hear the returning hero. A massive banner spans the street proclaiming "Hail to the Chief Who in Triumph Advances." Though an extract it is self-contained and sought after in its own right. This undated reprint circa 1970 is printed on an off-white stock artificially age toned to lend it a period feel. It's also slightly enlarged from the original. Scarce. N.p. hardcover
