Inscribed by Odysseus Elytis to Michael Curtis on the title page. Laid into the book is an announcement by the Arts Council Shop in London for a 1980 reading by Elytis and an advertisement for the Anvil Press printing of Selected Poems and The Axion Esti. Elytis won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1979. Michael Curtis was editor of the liberal News Chronicle at the age of 34. His opposition to the Suez Invasion led to the paper taking a significant hit in popularity. His attempts to modernize the paper fell afoul of the owners the Cadbury family and he resigned in 1957 after three years. He then worked as executive press aide to the Aga Khan founding the Daily Nation which played a major role in helping smooth Kenya's transition to independence in 1963. He worked for the Aga Kahn's social welfare institution until his retirement. Anvil Press Poetry unknown

An exceedingly clean and crisp copy. Dust jacket has some trivial rubbing to head and tail of spine entirely crisp and bright otherwise. Ralph Sylvester and Stathis Orphanos were publishers of the fine-press publishing company 'Sylvester & Orphanos.' Stathis was a noted photographer and born of Greek parents maintaining a residence on the island of Samos throughout his life. First published in Greece in 1978 the year before Elytis was awarded the Nobel Prize Maria Nefeli was a stark departure from the earlier work that had won him renown as the greatest Greek poet of his generation. Its novelty gave many early readers pause but 'despite the initial reservations voiced by some critics Maria Nefeli came to be regarded as the summa of Elytis's later writings.' Poetry Foundation.
