A very good set bound in publisher's contemporary 3/4 brown morocco and marbled boards. Mild general wear to the board extremities spine gilt dulled the inner hinges tender but holding and the contens fresh and clean. Civil War-themed bookplate to the verso of the front flyleaf in each volume. The second edition of Grant's memoirs published a decade after the first with marginal citations referencing either official US Government records or other books or publications which shed more light on the various statements made by Grant in his narrative. Also expanded with more illustrations. This second edition of the most popular presidential memoir was edited and overseen by Grant's son Frederick. Though the first edition so storied for its dramatic publication history is naturally more sought after this edition--less common in the trade--is probably superior for its enhanced scholarship. The binding is definitiely contemporary and is not signed and looks similar to other examples of this set which we have seen. As such we presume it to be the publisher's deluxe binding. Some wear to the corners tiny number stamp to a front blank in volume I else unmarked. Light rubbing to outer joints. Otherwise a nice set with inner hinges intact the spines fresh and unfaded and the contents appearing unread with all foldouts intact. A popular and well-regarded memoir among the best in both the military and presidential classes. Grant finished the memoirs on his deathbed and was convinced by his friend Mark Twain to use his publisher Charles L. Webster who sold the book by subscription only. Many of the book's "salesmen" were not really professional salesmen but veterans of the war who held Grant--warts and all--in very high esteem for his leadership during the conflict. These veterans often showed up to their neighbors' homes wearing their old uniforms; it's hard to imagine saying "no" to such a "salesman. Charles L. Webster hardcover

The president and Civil War general's remarkable memoir written in the final years of his life as he was suffering from terminal throat cancer. Suffering both physically and financially as the result of financial misfortune Grant began writing his autobiography in the fall of 1884 and finished in July of 1885 five days before his death. Samuel Clemens Mark Twain encouraged Grant and shepherded the book to publication through the Webster connection. Eagerly anticipated by a public that had been following Grant's illness in the press the book was an immediate success upon its release and has long been considered one of if not the best memoirs written by an American president. Since its publication it has received acclaim from literary figures including Twain and Gertrude Stein and from numerous modern American historians and political commentators from Eric Foner to Ta-Nehisi Coates.
