1979réf. 194241979. Covina Gina and Laurel Galana eds. The Lesbian Reader: An Amazon Quarterly Anthology 1975 a collection of lesbian feminist fiction essays and poetry selected from Amazon Quarterly the national lesbian literary magazine founded by Covina and Galana in Oakland in 1972. Published during the expansion of independent feminist presses and lesbian cultural organizing in the United States the anthology gathers writing from the magazine's three-year publication history addressing women's relationships sexuality emotional independence and the development of lesbian feminist thought. Contributors examine the expectations surrounding romantic partnerships the personal consequences of heterosexual social conventions and the possibilities of relationships between women outside traditional gender roles. The anthology preserves work originally circulated through an independent lesbian publishing enterprise at a time when mainstream literary outlets provided limited opportunities for openly lesbian writers. Covina Gina and Laurel Galana eds. The Lesbian Reader: An Amazon Quarterly Anthology. Oakland: The Amazon Press 1975. First edition. Softcover with illustrated wrappers featuring two women standing beside one another and a butterfly. Cover drawing and graphics by Sharon Behrends. The anthology contains short stories essays and poetry originally published in Amazon Quarterly including "Woman Becoming" "The Lesbian Love Ethic" and "I Dream in Female: The Metaphors of Evolution." In "The Lesbian Love Ethic" Donna Richards challenges the sexual expectations imposed upon lesbian relationships writing: "For the single Lesbian who has lived through a number of such affairs and has come to realize their dynamics this general expectation of sex.constitutes a suffocating straight jacket to her maneuverability" p. 41. Richards's discussion examines the tension between sexual obligation and personal autonomy questioning whether lesbian relationships might reproduce restrictive conventions associated with heterosexual partnerships. Other selections address love separation self-definition and women's intellectual and emotional lives. Founded in 1972 Amazon Quarterly published lesbian feminist literature and artwork during a period of rapid growth in women's independent publishing. Covina and Galana established the magazine to provide an outlet for women writers and artists whose work received limited attention from established publishers. Its contributors included Judy Grahn Audre Lorde Rita Mae Brown and other writers associated with lesbian feminism and the women's liberation movement. By collecting material from the magazine's 1972-1975 run The Lesbian Reader preserved the literary and political discussions that characterized its publication including debates over sexual relationships women's independence and feminist cultural expression. The anthology also records the role of small presses in distributing lesbian literature beyond local feminist circles during the 1970s. In very good condition. unknown
