1854pp. [x], 186. + Fourteen double-page folding lithographed plates. 12mo. Original blind-stamped cloth binding, with a gold window arch on the front board. Some slight chipping at binding extremities. First published in 1849, this important essay on architecture helped establish the Victorian taste for Gothic design. According to Ruskin, the leading principles of architecture are the "lamps" of Sacrifice, Truth, Power, Beauty, Life, Memory, and Obedience. He found the noblest style of architecture to be Gothic, but in time medieval architecture lost its power. He felt that this loss of vitality was the result of the spiritual decline of Christianity during the Renaissance. The essay greatly influenced Victorian art and design and flavored the tastes of generations. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W138

1997Dustjacket is protected in mylar. Minor scuffing to boards. ; 1.1 x 9.2 x 6.2 Inches; 379 pages; The names of early Germanic warrior tribes and leaders resound in songs and legends; the real story of the part they played in reshaping the ancient world is no less gripping. Herwig Wolfram's panoramic history spans the great migrations of the Germanic peoples and the rise and fall of their kingdoms between the third and eighth centuries, as they invaded, settled in, and ultimately transformed the Roman Empire. As Germanic military kings and their fighting bands created kingdoms, and won political and military recognition from imperial governments through alternating confrontation and accommodation, the "tribes" lost their shared culture and social structure, and became sharply differentiated. They acquired their own regions and their own histories, which blended with the history of the empire. In Wolfram's words, "the Germanic peoples neither destroyed the Roman world nor restored it; instead, they made a home for themselves within it. " This story is far from the "decline and fall" interpretation that held sway until recent decades. Wolfram's narrative, based on his sweeping grasp of documentary and archaeological evidence, brings new clarity to a poorly understood period of Western history.

1977To the great unhappiness of a lovely young woman, Sarah, she is placed under the guardianship of Edward Channon when her father is murdered. Reserved and private, Edward's presence in the house of mourning makes her uneasy but is faintly enticing. She can enjoy the excitement of the coastal English village, even with the threat of Napoleon's invasion ever present. And she is still allowed to see Will Penfyn, the young man whom she's loved since childhood, with whom she secretly intends to elope. However, in the middle of the dangers rocking this turbulent era, Sarah's contentment suddenly comes to an end. Her planned elopement with Will is interrupted by the increasingly forceful Edward- now a most mystifying enigma to her. Book
