Focusing on the period from the invention of the alphabet in the 8th century B.C. to the early 4th century B.C., when the local alphabet had been supplanted by the common Ionic script, the book presents inscriptions on stone, both public and private, scratched inscriptions on pottery, including the political ostraca, and some inscriptions on lead tablets. Although the vase inscriptions are brief, they number in the thousands and give an accurate picture of the art of writing and the state of literacy in the Classical Period.

2000Light shelfwear to book. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; Sandpiper Reprint of 1972 edition. ; The Lyell lectures; 361 pages; The central argument of Stanley Morison's work is that the development of script (inscriptional, calligraphic or typographical) has been the result of changes in religious or political environment, of friction between church and state, and of the schism between Eastern and Western Christendom. Morison begins with an example of alphabetic forms on a 6th century BC gravestone from Melos and proceeds through commentary on a notable collection of more than 180 illustrated specimens, to trace the career of the Graeco-Roman alphabet up to its use in newspaper typefaces of the 1950s. He also seeks to show that the most widely used printers' typefaces of the twentieth century owe more to their Greek than to their Roman antecedents.
1993Light rubbing to front cover. ; Critical editions of most classical authors are based on readings transmitted by medieval scholars that can be examined and collated. Modern editions of Petronius, on the other hand, are principally based on printed editions, most of them published in France during the sixteenth century. In this volume T. Wade Richardson considers the use made of the Petronius manuscripts then extant by seven French humanist editors for their various editions, commentaries, and notes. Some of the manuscripts they used may be equated with extant exemplars, which therefore serve as a good check on the quality of their readings. But as much as half of the text rests on the sixteenth-century witness alone. Through a broad and integrated study of the problems of the Petronius text the author attempts to unravel the tangled skein of humanist work on Petronius, to settle some of the old textual puzzles, and to solidify the text and recast the apparatus. Richardson also provides information on the codicology and palaeography of the texts and on the talents and habits of the scholars who created them. ; Phoenix Supplementary Volume; 0.84 x 9.42 x 5.98 Inches; 187 pages
