One of 40 copies folio size 68 pp. signed by Rollin Milroy Claudia Cohen and Barbara Hodgson with accompanying letter and booklet. Rollin Milroy has earned an enthusiastic and devoted following through his attention to detail and exquisite letterpress printing. This checklist is itself a work of art replete with tipped-in specimens. Although as Milroy wrote in a letter announcing the book the book is "Heavenly Monkey's next / sort-of-last publication." He would issue two years later "The Lady or the Tiger bound tête-bêche with The Discourager of Hesitancy" also under the "HM" imprint. Issued in an edition of only forty copies the first ten containing extra specimens in a box. Again we cannot help but quote from the same letter: "I do not call these deluxe they simply are extra. I do not recommend them to anyone who actually owns HM books. My best hope is that the extras might prove useful to institutions in some educational or cautionary context." Accompanying the book is the aforementioned letter as well as a separate "sort-of announcement" which replicates some of the pages in the book along with a selection of cuts. ___DESCRIPTION: Parchment paper back lettered in black with painted paper over boards Ingres endpapers frontis a cut of a print shop with a monkey-headed character in center stage title page in black and brown the calligraphy by Martin Jackson the Contents page lists the books published by Milroy under both the "Heavenly Monkey" imprint as well as "HM Editions" the Dramatis Personae page lists those who have been involved in the enterprise marginalia throughout in Milroy's hand some of which are printed and some manuscript; folio size the binding 12 1/8" by 8 1/2" pagination: 1-4 5-66 1 colophon 1 press mark with an additional speciman tipped onto the rear flyleaf; total edition 40 copies this no. 19 the colophon signed by Claudia Cohen Barbara Hodgson and Rollin Milroy. ___CONDITION: Fine we acquired it directly from the publisher; it remains clean crisp and as new. ___CITATION: This Monkey's Gone to Heaven no. Plus 6 folding lithograph plates printed on thick paper with a total of 30 colour illustrations. HARDCOVER bound in contemporary cloth gilt lettering to cover old shelf ticket to spine old military institutional stamps to first free endpaper and first page. In fine condition. Excellent copy exceptionally well preserved. ~ FIRST EDITION. This is the report on the famous firing tests with a 24 cm gun on metal armour construction which were made on November 9 1875. The report is dated within the text "Scheveningen 16 Juni 1879". The 24cm iron gun was a rifled breech loader based on the French gun "Modèle 1864-66" introduced from 1870 onwards to arm the positions in the Dutch cities Den Helder Willemstad Hellevoetsluis and Amsterdam. The armoured plates for the firing tests were manufactured in England each measuring 3.23x1 meter 20.32 cm thick at the bottom and 15.24 cm at the top. The 2 giant plates were fit together and the whole leaned against special armoured support. Various types of ammunition were tested and with the lack of photographic technique the damage assessments had to be drawn. The military artist who executed the drawings is to be highly commended. Not only they are extremely accurate they are finely drawn and at a letter stage reproduced in colour lithography. Of utmost rarity. Probably only 3 other copies are known all in The Netherlands. D-3 No imprint (1879). hardcover
