1770réf. GD013564okBC2S6London: Printed for W. Strahan J. And F. Rivington R. Baldwin 1770. London: Printed for W. Strahan J. And F. Rivington R. Baldwin 1770 7th Edition 8vo. volume 1 of 4. Book bound in warn contemporary full calf leather with brown title label. Hinges cracking but holding lacking endpages. An Extraordinary 18th century association copy of Charles Rollin's foundational treatise on rhetoric and classical education. This specific title was a cornerstore text of the colonial American college curriculum. This volume boasts remarkable provenance linking it directly to the inner circle of the Early American Republic. Prominently signed at the top of the title page by Revolutionary War cavalry hero Governor of Virginia and father of Robert E. Lee Major General Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee 1756-1818. The signature signed Henry Lee matches known examples of Lee's autograph. Lee graduated from the College of New Jessey Princeton in 1773 a timeline that aligns perfectly with the usage of this 1770 text. Adding to the book's intrigue the upper right quadrant of the title page features a crisp hand-carved name stamp reading "A. Burr." in a well preserved reddish-brown ink. Aaron Burr 1756-1836 the 3rd U.S. Vice President graduated from Princeton in 1772 and was co-founder of the campus's American Whig Society. On the verso of the front board is a "Scholars' Library Bookplate Number 49 noting strict circulation rules "must be returned to the Librarian within a fortnight" heavily suggesting this volume served as an early collegiate or literary society textbook during the exact window Burr and Lee overlapped on campus. An interesting artifact of early American education and political history. . Signed. Seventh Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No Dust Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall. London: Printed for W. Strahan, J. And F. Rivington, R. Baldwin Hardcover
