réf. 2725No imprint 1879. 1st Edition . Hardcover. . ~ ~ NOTE: THE PRICE OF THIS BOOK IS CURRENTLY REDUCED! ~ ~ . Octavo. Pp. 19. Plus 6 folding lithograph plates printed on thick paper with a total of 30 colour illustrations. HARDCOVER bound in contemporary cloth gilt lettering to cover old shelf ticket to spine old military institutional stamps to first free endpaper and first page. In fine condition. Excellent copy exceptionally well preserved. ~ FIRST EDITION. This is the report on the famous firing tests with a 24 cm gun on metal armour construction which were made on November 9 1875. The report is dated within the text "Scheveningen 16 Juni 1879". The 24cm iron gun was a rifled breech loader based on the French gun "Modèle 1864-66" introduced from 1870 onwards to arm the positions in the Dutch cities Den Helder Willemstad Hellevoetsluis and Amsterdam. The armoured plates for the firing tests were manufactured in England each measuring 3.23x1 meter 20.32 cm thick at the bottom and 15.24 cm at the top. The 2 giant plates were fit together and the whole leaned against special armoured support. Various types of ammunition were tested and with the lack of photographic technique the damage assessments had to be drawn. The military artist who executed the drawings is to be highly commended. Not only they are extremely accurate they are finely drawn and at a letter stage reproduced in colour lithography. Of utmost rarity. Probably only 3 other copies are known all in The Netherlands. 1905réf. 62003Portland OR: Albert Hess & Co. Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition 1905. One souvenir postcard. 11.25 x 3.25 in. With birds-eye view by Caughey on recto advertisement for Willson in lower right corner center crease fold as issued; postcard information and cancelled stamp & postmark for Portland addressed to W.H. Bilyen 90 1/2 - 5th St. City Portland Oregon minor dustsoiling slight toning very minor wear at fold crease still VG copy. First edition of this uncommon folding souvenir postcard celebrating the Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition featuring and reproducing the famed Caughey birds-eye. The birds-eye depicts the Guild’s Lake area of the grounds up and operating now bounded by Reed to Thurston Streets and 31st to 24th Streets in NW Portland. Prof. Willson fl. 1904-1920 began as a dance instructor with the Academy of Dancing located in the Hirsch Building but within a few years of the Exposition set up his own dance studio and was noted instructor of Waltzes. This card advertises the fact that couples could dance for .50¢ while an “Extra Lady” for .25¢ and even better for men in the very hot and humid Portland Pavilion they could dance without their coats in Shirt Waists. Caughey 1851-1925 was an Ohio Civil War veteran an itinerant chalk plate artist and had just created the year before in Feb. 1904 a Birds-Eye view reproduced over two pages in the Lewis and Clark Journal with noted birds-eye artist and cartographer Fred Routledge 1871-1936. Caughey began producing birds eye views in and around Portsmouth NH in the 1880’s and eventually became a commercial artist and newspaper editor in Portland Oregon where he would often produce images for the Mutual Label & Lithographic Co.
