1835réf. 859291835. Murder and Infanticide in Berkshire: No Copies Located on OCLC or Library Hub Broadside. Crime. Smith Thomas b.1814. An Account of a Dreadful Murder Committed by Thomas Smith Aged 21 on the Body of Eliz. Young Aged 18 at Sutton In Berkshire On Thursday February the 5th 1835. Reading: Walker Printer 1835. 10" x 7.5" 25.3 x 19 cm broadside mounted on a slightly larger backing sheet. Text in single column below headline followed by two columns of verse separated by ornamental rule. Light toning faint fold lines minor dampstaining to corners just touching the headline. A well-preserved example. Rare. $1850. This gripping and graphic broadside details a tragic case of murder and infanticide in Berkshire. Thomas Smith and Elizabeth Young were both employed as servants in a "respectable" household when their intimate relationship resulted in Young's pregnancy. Seeking to end the affair after shifting his affections to a local farmer's daughter Smith lured the eight-months-pregnant Young into the woods and stabbed her in the chest. According to the text and accompanying verses the crime took an even more horrific turn: ".it appears by his confession and other circumstances that in her dying agonies she was delivered of a living child which the hard harted monster sic dashed on the ground." A highly significant survival of 19th-century street literature. No references to this specific crime or the execution of Thomas Smith have been located in contemporary newspapers or standard genealogical records suggesting this ephemeral broadside may be the only surviving historical account of the event. No copies located on OCLC or Library Hub.Unrecorded in the primary British and American crime fiction/broadside collections including Oxford University Bodleian the British Library and Harvard University. unknown

The broadsides in this collection represent the only known copies with no others recorded on OCLC Library Hub or in institutional collections such as those at Harvard or the British Library. They provide grisly accounts of murder necrophilia rape domestic abuse infanticide and labor unrest. The executions they document were solemn and uneventful or carried out by celebrity executioners or in one case never happened at all. Some include elaborate woodcuts or verses. Others are simple columns of hastily struck type. All provide a unique picture of criminal justice in England from the days of the Bloody Code to the reforms of the Victorian era. Moderate toning to interior light browning in places chipping and edgewear to some leaves tears to leaf 2H4 pp. 239-240 with loss to text at upper left and lower right corners. Item housed in archival box. An interesting and scarce title. $750. A classic example of London's penny literature The Annals of Crime continues the tradition of Newgate calendars past and delivers florid accounts of treason murder robbery forgery piracy and many other crimes. Cheap and ubiquitous periodicals like this inspired and provided source material for Charles Dickens and many other novelists. The Annals was issued individually by number in parts of six numbers each and in a single bound volume. Based on the binding and condition the present copy is probably one of the single-volume issues; for this reason we believe the missing content from No. 6 is due to a contemporary error by the printer. Like all other issues in the volume it consists of 8 pp. but its account of the execution of Louis Mandrin is unfinished. We could not find a digital copy identical to ours for comparison. Issues of this short-lived periodical are scarce today. After Gee was engaged to invest 2000 as part of executing an estate he received a letter from a prospective client inviting him to a house in York Street to discuss business. When he got out of the coach he quickly realized that things were not as they seemed. Three men attacked him bound him and demanded that he sign over the investments and the remaining money from his estate case. The participants were led by a disgruntled relative who had been left out of the will. Gee managed to escape his captors and report the abduction and theft to a local magistrate. The perpetrators were eventually acquitted of theft on a technicality but convicted of assault and imprisoned. This broadside is a fine example of the work published by George Smeeton 1780-1847 one of the best-known publishers of crime-related pamphlets and broadsides in the early-nineteenth-century London. 1886réf. 140042London: Irwin Langley & Co. 1886. Advice to Strangers" - avoiding the criminal pitfalls of 1880s London First and only edition of this extraordinary little volume offering practical advice against the thieves and tricksters plaguing the streets of London. The first half of the text is a spotter's guide on pickpockets "Who they are and what they are like" with explanations of their methods the distraction of the "stall" the techniques of the "wire" given in sufficient detail and with such specifics as to suggest that the author genuinely was of the profession claimed. The second section offers "Advice for Strangers" to the metropolis illuminating the operations of the "Mysterious Dental Rooms" "swell assignations houses" that thrive on the "carnal weaknesses of casual visitors to the city"; forwards an explanation for "the mysterious disappearances which are almost daily reported" the lure of "a pretty face snapping black eyesand red lips" drinks in a café ending with a "bloated disfigured swollen corpse" pulled from the river; and looks into the "women and young girls who have a great mania for disappearing". A respectable and highly cultivated young girl in Liverpool taking "short cut through a disreputable part of town" reappears in London the story never made public but understood to be "horrible in the extreme". The final sections comprise a short piece on "the Dark Ways of Street-sharpers" and a lengthier description of a rather complicated American scam to illustrate "High Class and Ingenious Roguery on a Grand Style" followed by a brief explanation of cipher writing and reading which concludes with a "Prize Competition £1000 in Prizes" requiring the solution of three ciphered messages. Noting well what has gone before this has more than a hint of "roguery" to it but where the catch might have been is beyond our wit to discover. We have been unable to trace any other publications or enterprises put out over the name of Irwin Langley & Co. Scarce just two locations world-wide BL and Harvard Medical School. 1827réf. 87802Albany: D. M'Glashan 1827. First and Only Edition. Octavo in 4's. 24cm. Stab bound pages with the title page serving as the front cover and no trace that the pamphlet was ever bound. 35pp. Some mild chipping to edges and extremities most notably the upper right corner toning and soiling to wraps; internally clean but uniformly toned with offsetting from the type throughout edges untrimmed luxuriously wide margins some traces of careless opening in places. Very good by dint of survival and solidity rather than beauty the paper is cheap and the pamphlet was printed to leverage opportunity rather than posterity. A notable and at the time highly controversial trial dealing with what was later referred to as "The Murder at Cherry Hill." The prominent New York Van Rensselaer family owned and lived at Cherry Hill Farm in Albany the daughter Elsie was married somewhat unhappily to John Whipple and fell for a younger man she met in a bar by the name of Jesse Strang. The couple fell in love Elsie expressed her deep unhappiness with Whipple; Strang masquerading under the name of Jesse Orton took on a job at the farm and began an affair with Elsie which was maintained by the house staff many of whom were enslaved people of color whose testimonies were heard at the trial passing notes between the two. Elsie chafing somewhat at having to endure her legal husband resolved that he must die to make way for Strang and they would run away together to Canada. The first plan was arsenic poisoning which failed. What Elsie lacked in poisoning ability she made up for with murderous intent and she purchased a rifle removed the ammunition from her now somewhat suspicious husband's gun and induced Strang who does not come across as the sharpest tool in the shed to shoot Whipple dead. Strang then attempted to fabricate an alibi which did not hold up and he was arrested. What followed was a widely publicised trial in which both defendants turned on each other Elsie's status as the daughter of prominent landowners was leveraged as protection from any serious punishment and Strang bore the brunt of the law. He had of course further doomed himself by attempting to plant evidence lying under several oaths and generally being one of the less gifted murderers of the early 19th century; he was hanged Elsie went home to Cherry Hill the Van Rensselaer's invested heavily in local collective amnesia and the rest of the US stared somewhat incredulously and gossiped over their breakfast grits. It was a carnival of awfulness that posed many questions about the societal rights and freedoms of women the privileges of wealth and the integrity of the judicial system. Fairly represented in institutions with 20 examples in US libraries but scarce in commerce and usually in later binding. D. M'Glashan unknown

A hard-boiled novel set in the world of New York gangsters focused not so much on a single criminal plot as on the day-to-day machinations of its central figure one Antonio Scarvak head of a small-time rum-running and extortion racket. The New York Times in its 1931 review noted with some pique that Coe's antihero seemed ".an incredibly dull-witted gunman.who moves rather absurdly through the web of murder graft and corruption that makes the background for the novel." Coe a former boxer and federal agent specialized in works that brought to life the criminal underworld with which he was long familiar and his work is unusual in that while it was clearly designed to appeal to the growing audience for lurid hard-boiled crime it kept one foot firmly planted in the realm of social fiction. There are only a few novelists of the period whose work is equally likely to be cited in Hubin's Bibliography of Crime Fiction this title cited on p.88 as in Archibald Hanna's bibliography of American social fiction A Mirror for the Nation no. 728. Uncommon in jacket this is a particularly fresh example. Cosmopolitan unknown

Porterfield a pioneering sociologist at Texas Christian University seeks to demonstrate that juvenile criminal behavior is nearly always related to parental neglect or abuse and asserts that it is the responsibility of the community to provide a surrogate: ".the community is responsible for all youth whose parents fail them and for the training and improvement of oppoortunities of parents so that they can escape failure." from jacket copy.
