1946Best.-Nr. 511744Yale University Press 1946. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. NEAR FINE/Very Good. Hans Morgenthau's copy with his stationary cards turn and used as bookmarks with his occasional pencil marks in the margins. First Printing. xii 303pp. 8vo gray cloth b/w frontispiece portrait. Cassirer's final work published posthumously. Morgenthau reviewed the book favorably in Ethics Jan. 1947 Vol. 57 No. 2: 'This volume is indeed a great event in political philosophy. I say advisedly 'political philosophy' and not 'history of political philosophy' for it was the unique gift of Cassirer to inspire and deepen philosophic thought by illuminating its history. There never was a less antiquarian historian than Cassirer. In truth he was not a historian of philosophy but a philosopher who used history as a vehicle for philosophic thought as others have used the aphorism or the system for the same purpose.'. 1960Best.-Nr. 509819Alfred A. Knopf 1960. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. VERY GOOD/Good. AUTHOR'S ANNOTATED COPY. Hans Morgenthau's personal copy annotated in pencil to several pages with corrections for the Vintage paperback edition with onionskin copy of a typed note summarizing his new introductions for Purpose and In Defense of the National Interest. It reads 'The addition new introduction to THE PURPOSE OF AMERICAN POLITICS is primarily a reinterpretation of the present crisis in which American politics finds itself today. When the book was written the crisis seemed to be similar to preceding ones to be overcome by preceding measures. What we are actually witnessing is a crisis which appears to be different from preceding ones and which requires new more radical intervention.' The crises alluded to in this precis are named in his new introduction for the 1964 edition as domestic concerns: 'equality in freedom for the American Negro and the restoration of a meaningful economic and social order.' xi 3 3-359 viii 2. 12mo sewn binding in burgundy cloth gilt stamped spine lettering and blindstamped HJM monogram to front cover pale blue topstain deckled fore edge. Some wear to the edges fore tail corner bumped; DJ edgeworn and with a few short tears some loss to spine ends price clipped by the publisher and repriced with '$5.00' stamp. Hans Morgenthau was one of the foremost political theorists of the 20th century. He arrived in the US in 1937 as a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany going on to a distinguished carreer with appointments and professorships at numberous prestigious institutions including Yale Harvard Columbia California and the University of Chicago. Morgenthau's outsize impact on the study of international relations in the West cannot be underestimated. His 'Political Realism' theory was immensely influential in American Politics notably gaining purchase in his consultancy for Truman Eisenhower and Kennedy as well as in his protege Henry Kissinger. Dubbing him 'the Pope of Realism' Stanley Hoffman writes 'If our discipline has any founding father it is Mortenthau.' William Scheuerman writes 'Morgenthau's intellectual agenda effectively dominated the scholarly study of international relations in the United States well into the 1970's. Not only did Morgenthau write two of postwar Realism's most influential books Politics Among Nations and In Defense of the National Interest but he penned about a dozen others as well as hundreds of scholarly articles on an astonishing range of topics. Unlike most academics Morgenthau also became a much sought-after public intellectual and his oftentimes pithy commentaries on foreign affairs appeared regularly in popular magazines and journals as well as newspapers like the New York Times from the 1950s onwards. In 'Purpose of American Politics he sets out to name the lack thereof--a general malaise in post-war politics wherein the goals of international intervention were disappearing in seemingly inverse proportion to the increase in the exertion of American power. The book provides an intellectual framework for his early and lonely dissnet on American involvement in Vietnam which would lead to his ostracization from the Kennedy White House in 1963. PROVENANCE: From Hans Morgenthau's daughter Susanna Morgenthau. Alfred A. Knopf hardcover
