First published in 1989 this work proved to be a huge publishing success with over 35 editions in less than a century. According to Gastão de Melo e Matos in the new translation and printing of 1945 it was with the Restoration that Portugal became known to the contemporary average European since Portugal was not a political factor in Europe; and it was for the actions directed against the King of Spain that this work achieved fame. It was later translated into Portuguese notably by Friar Mateus Brandão in 1815 and by José Ribeiro de Figueiredo in 1843.
