Best.-Nr. 66896Ephemera. Four pages of genealogy on two loose leaves 6 1/2 x 10 1/4" which appear to have come from a family Bible. The pages are divided into columns with the following headings: Births; Deaths; Marriages. One page lists the births of Joseph A. Young's parents Brigham Young and Mary Ann Angell. On the reverse the marriages of Joseph A. Young and his family members are listed. The second page lists the children of Joseph A. Young and Mary Ann Ayres in the "Births" column. The days of the week along with "G S L City" are listed next to their names and the dates of their births often with the exact time listed as well. On the verso of this page the "Deaths" of their children are listed Mary Thornton Young Elsie Vilate Josephine Young Alice Young and others. Joseph Angell Young 1834-1875 was Brigham Young's eldest son. He was born October 14 1834 in Kirtland Ohio. He came to Utah in an early day and actively participated in the affairs of the new settlement as a frontiersman. He also played an important role in emigration affairs and he is known for enduring bitter storms and biting frosts during one of the harshest winters in order to successfully rescue the belated hand-cart companies of that season. In addition he built and was the first superintendent of the Ogden-Salt Lake line the old Utah Central and was among the promoters of the Utah Southern. In 1872 Young was appointed to preside over the Sevier district of the Church spanning from Gunnison to Kanab. Two years later the settlements on the Sevier were organized as the Sevier Stake of Zion and Elder Young was appointed to preside over this Stake. He held this position until his death taking a significantly active part that tended to build up and strengthen the new settlements as well as introducing the United Order to the Saints on the Sevier. In Latter-day Saint Biographical Encyclopedia Volume I Andrew Jenson cites a passage published by Deseret News following Young's death: "Elder Young was esteemed for his many estimable qualities of heart as well as head. He was a man of naturally keen intelligence his mental qualities even reaching what might be termed brilliancy in some directions while his generosity was proverbial especially among the working classes all who were ever in his employ holding him in esteem for his universally kind and fair treatment." Andrew Jenson also points out that "On account of the persecutions of the 'Mormon' people he Joseph A. Young was deprived of the advantage of an early education but was a discriminating and passionate reader and at the time of his death had perhaps the finest private library in the Territory." Two leaves from a Family Record which contain the genealogy of an important family descending from Brigham Young and significant to the history of Utah and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. - Information obtained from "Latter-day Saint Biographical Encyclopedia Volume I" by Andrew Jenson. unknown books

1828Best.-Nr. BK0113Beverly Massachusetts 1828. Autograph letter signed 3 pp. measuring 8 x 9 ½ inches addressed to Charles Coffin Esq. Buxton Maine. Stampless folded letter with manuscript "Beverly Ms Nov 26" postmark and "18¾" rate. Separation reinforced with archival tape due to brittle paper; otherwise very good. A research letter from jurist and statesman Nathan Dane to Maine antiquarian Charles Coffin concerning the seven Narragansett townships granted to veterans and descendants of veterans of King Philip's War. Dane reports an effort to trace Narragansett No. 1 incorporated as Buxton in 1772 and discusses the difficulty created when the original grants acquired new names in proprietary and governmental records: "I have examined the doings of the legislature of Massachusetts as far as I have them for more than a century past. I find the name Narragansett No. 1 &c. mentioned but three times once in the year 1760 when in erecting the counties of Cumberland and Lincoln in describing the boundaries of them Narragansett No. 1 is mentioned; again in 1764 it is mentioned in the act incorporating the town of Gorham; again in 1772 Narragansett No. 1 was incorporated and made a town by the name of Buxton." Dane suggests reconstructing the history of the grants through a combination of legislative records proprietary papers and the memories of "aged persons" as he "sees no other way to trace back to their origin these seven grants or proprietaries." He also provides information on Major Samuel Appleton a military officer during King Philip's War and on the early Dane family in Ipswich carefully distinguishing the surnames Dane and Dean through deeds wills and signed documents. The recipient Charles Coffin later published historical work on the Narragansett townships. A record of early nineteenth-century antiquarian method showing Dane's methodology for reconstructing the colonial history of Maine and Massachusetts. . unknown books
Best.-Nr. List3008United States N.d. Thirty-one pages: three typed pages with editorial marks measuring 8 ½ x 11 inches; twenty-eight pages of handwritten notes measuring 6 ½ x 8 ½ and smaller. Typed pages fragile with damage; others near fine. Overall excellent. Content warning: This description mentions sexual assault. Alex Haley 1921-1992 was an African American author known for his bestselling 1976 semi-genealogical book Roots: The Saga of an American Family. Roots follows the story of Kunta Kinte a young Mandinka man in 18th-century Gambia who is sold into enslavement and of his descendants in the US. The historical novel was based upon Haley's genealogical research into his family history; Kunta Kinte is ostensibly Haley's ancestor on his mother's side. At the time of his death in 1992 Haley had been working with Australian writer David Stevens on a novel about his father's side of the family. The novel was published in 1993 as Queen: The Story of an American Family. Offered here is a collection of Haley's own notes that based on the subject matter were likely used in the writing of Queen. The notes discuss Haley's grandparents Alec Haley and Queen Jackson-the latter being the book's namesake-and their son Alex's father Simon Haley. Simon Haley was a professor of agriculture and most of his son's notes about him concern his struggle to obtain an education. The elder Haley worked as a Pullman porter and attended Lane College an HBCU in Tennessee; he was on the brink of having to drop out when "one night he delivered hot milk to an insomniac industrialist who finding Dad was a student financially helped him enter A&T at Greensboro." Haley's notes on Alec and Queen are disturbing and sometimes graphic. Both were children of sexual assault between enslaved African American women and white men. Alec's father was Haley plantation overseer William Baugh and Queen's was James Jackson the owner of Jackson plantation; Haley describes how Alec's mother Viney was sold away from her family "for stubbornly resisting the overseer's further advances". Haley describes a scene that occurred when Queen was 18 after a "white woman said she'd 'sassed' her" and a mob "had gathered to catch" her: "Queen Haley tells white mob she's as white as they and why - her father raped her mother . and they cannot bear the intolerable reproach . and try to rape or kill her." These events and witnessing another lynch mob have permanent effects on Queen's psyche which Haley's notes illustrate with anecdotes: Queen "looking out of windows 'all those lights they're after me --'" running off and "crawling under the bed" and even disappearing for an entire day and being found hiding "in a deep ravine". However Queen apparently plays the relationship between Jackson and Queen's mother Easter as a forbidden love affair. Of interest to scholars of reconstruction narratives and African American nonfiction novels and historical fiction. unknown books
