1750réf. ABC_46340The Netherlands 1750. Oblong 8vo ca. 10.5 x 16 cm. 18th-century gold-tooled calf gold-tooled spine each board with a double-fillet frame a centrepiece and four cornerpieces gilt edges green cloth ties. Manuscript on paper written in brown and black ink in several - 17th- 18th- and 19th-century hands. With a full-page unidentified coat-of-arms showing three salamanders drawn in brown ink and a page containing 6 smaller crests of branches of the Roorda family in black ink. 1 blank 5 3 blank 20 1 blank 1 78 blank ll. Manuscript family chronicle incorporating multiple chronicles from the 17th and 18th century. The manuscript chronicles the births and deaths of four generations of the Bos Werdolen or Verdole and Roda family in Amersfoort Groningen The Hague Scheveningen IJsselstijn Tiel Deventer Kampen Zuilen and Edam. The book was probably compiled by Dirk Daniel Roda 1726-1898 a lieutenant in the infantry and later beer brewer shortly after the death of his father in 1747. It incorporates chronicles by his father Michiel Roda 1686-1747 his maternal grandfather Jacob Werdolen chronicling 1668-1686 Jacob Werdolen's father Hendrik van Werdolen a note from 1639 and a copy by Hendrik's wife Barbera Bos born 1596 of the chronicle written by her father chronicling 1577-1601.The different chronicles are interleaved with notes by Dirk Daniel Roda which supply additional biographical information. In several pages he describes the his own Roorda ancestors in the 17th century and the process by which they changed their name to Roda. Other notes chronicle the origins of the Roorda family crest of which he has drawn the known six versions. A full-page coat-of-arms containing three salamanders was possibly drawn by Barbera Bos. Although this specific crest could not be identified it probably refers to a branch other than "Bos" meaning forest or wood in her family. With the bookplate of Eltjo Aldegondus van Beresteyn 1876-1948 on the front paste-down. Also with his library label on the front board. Van Beresteyn was very interested in genealogy explaining his possession of the present family chronicle and founded the Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie CBG. A pencil inscription on the second to last leaf notes that the book was bought from H. Coffrie in 1938.Binding somewhat worn and rubbed leather on the spine somewhat cracked and with a few minor gaps paste-downs slightly browned some occasional spotting browning and soiling but overall in good condition. A fascinating family chronicle with a very interesting provenance.l For Van Beresteyn: J.A.A. Bervoets 'Beresteijn jhr. 1828réf. BK0113Beverly Massachusetts 1828. Autograph letter signed 3 pp. measuring 8 x 9 ½ inches addressed to Charles Coffin Esq. Buxton Maine. Stampless folded letter with manuscript "Beverly Ms Nov 26" postmark and "18¾" rate. Separation reinforced with archival tape due to brittle paper; otherwise very good. A research letter from jurist and statesman Nathan Dane to Maine antiquarian Charles Coffin concerning the seven Narragansett townships granted to veterans and descendants of veterans of King Philip's War. Dane reports an effort to trace Narragansett No. 1 incorporated as Buxton in 1772 and discusses the difficulty created when the original grants acquired new names in proprietary and governmental records: "I have examined the doings of the legislature of Massachusetts as far as I have them for more than a century past. I find the name Narragansett No. 1 &c. mentioned but three times once in the year 1760 when in erecting the counties of Cumberland and Lincoln in describing the boundaries of them Narragansett No. 1 is mentioned; again in 1764 it is mentioned in the act incorporating the town of Gorham; again in 1772 Narragansett No. 1 was incorporated and made a town by the name of Buxton." Dane suggests reconstructing the history of the grants through a combination of legislative records proprietary papers and the memories of "aged persons" as he "sees no other way to trace back to their origin these seven grants or proprietaries." He also provides information on Major Samuel Appleton a military officer during King Philip's War and on the early Dane family in Ipswich carefully distinguishing the surnames Dane and Dean through deeds wills and signed documents. The recipient Charles Coffin later published historical work on the Narragansett townships. A record of early nineteenth-century antiquarian method showing Dane's methodology for reconstructing the colonial history of Maine and Massachusetts. . unknown

This genealogy with many interleaved illustrations offers a history of the Little family from George of Newbury the immigrant ancestor through nine generations of his descendants in both male and female lines. Almost all the first three generations lived and died in Newbury Massachusetts. Through the end of the eighteenth century i.e. ca. 1800 we rarely find the family beyond the bounds of Maine Massachusetts New Hampshire and Vermont. Within the next eighty years the family could be found in nearly every state and territory of the Union. Of the 6500 descendants mentioned in the compilation nearly 3000 claimed Massachusetts and New Hampshire as their residence about 1500 each; 750 Maine; 500 Vermont; 400 New York; and 250 Canada. Another thousand resided in "western states." The family's leading occupation was agriculture. Of fourteen hundred heads of family whose occupations were known to the compiler more than a third were farmers. About three hundred were engaged in business mechanical or professional pursuits. One in twenty served in each of the three "learned professions": theology medicine and law. Five of the family served as college presidents. Apart from LITTLE and its variants family names that appear most frequently in this publication are: ADAMS ATKINSON BAILEY BROWN CHASE CLEMENT COFFIN EATON EMERY GERRISH GILMAN HALE HOWE KIMBALL KNIGHT MERRILL MOODY MOORE MORSE NOYES POORE READ SAWYER SHURTLEFF SMITH STEVENS TENNEY THURLOW TOPPAN and WEBSTER.
