The recipient was Sir Michael Hicks Beach Bt. 1st Earl of St. Aldwyn and 9th Baronet of Beverston. He had a long political career serving as a Conservative MP from 1864 until 1906 twice serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer and briefly as Leader of the Opposition in 1886. .
