"This masterpiece of historical penetration and literary style has remained one of the ageless historical works Gibbon brought a width of vision and a critical mastery of the available sources which have not been equalled to this day; and the result was clothed in inimitable prose" PMM 222. "For 22 years Gibbon was a prodigy of steady and arduous application. His investigations extended over almost the whole range of intellectual activity for nearly 1500 years. And so thorough were his methods that the laborious investigations of German scholarship the keen criticisms of theological zeal and the steady researches of two centuries have brought to light very few important errors in the results of his labors. But it is not merely the learning of his work learned as it is that gives it character as a history. It is also that ingenious skill by which the vast erudition the boundless range the infinite variety and the gorgeous magnificence of the details are all wrought together in a symmetrical whole. It is still entitled to be esteemed as the greatest historical work ever written" Adams Manual of Historical Literature 146-7. Printed for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell, in the Strand hardcover
1776rif. 191127London: for A. Strahan; and T. Cadell 1776-88. The apogee of Enlightenment history First edition of Gibbon's magnum opus one of the great products of the Enlightenment and among the most influential of all histories. For the editors of Printing and the Mind of Man "this masterpiece of historical penetration and literary style has remained one of the ageless historical works" PMM. When the extra 500 copies of these sheets were printed these corrections were included in the text eliminating the need for the original cancels. This set includes the original printings of the first 28 sheets with cancel leaves at X4 and a4. The first volume was published with great fanfare in February 1776; the second and third were published in March 1781 and the final three in May 1788. 6 vols quarto 269 x 212 mm. 1896rif. 187026London: John Murray 1896. First edition. This collection of letters offers an intimate look at the life of the famed author of The History of the Decline and Fall of the Rome Empire 1776-88. 2 vols octavo 228 x 143 mm. Frontispieces. Rebound in purple half morocco spine with gilt-ruled compartments with black morocco labels gilt-ruled boards top edges gilt. A few small marks to rear cover of vol 2. Leaves are not all uniform in size. A few leaves are out of place and out of sequence: the frontispiece for vol 2 is inserted into vol 1 instead; the plate that is meant to face page 108 instead faces the title page vol 2. Otherwise a clean set very good. hardcover
