The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire continues to rank as a 'masterpiece of historical penetration and literary style and has remained one of the ageless historical works which. maintain their hold upon the layman and continue to stimulate the scholar' PMM. Controversial since its first appearance Gibbon argued that Rome's fall was the 'natural and inevitable effect of immoderate greatness. Prosperity ripened the principle of decay; the causes of destruction multiplied with the extent of conquest; and as soon as time or accident had removed the artificial supports the stupendous fabric yielded to the pressure of its own weight' chapter xxxviii. As a result this hollow empire succumbed easily to the twin forces of barbarianism and Christianity which had been gaining momentum over the course of the fourth century AD. Although attacked for his perceived irreligion Gibbon's work received many positive reviews and has since become a cornerstone text in the study of Western history. Writing to Gibbon in December 1788 his friend Adam Smith noted that 'by the universal assent of every man of taste and learning. Decline and Fall sets you at the very head of the whole literary tribe at present existing in Europe' ODNB. From the library of Percy Lousada 1823-1859 with his bookplate and arms in gilt to the upper cover of each volume. cf.PMM 222. London, Printed for T. Cadell, Strand et al., 1838. unknown

Lewis Grassic Gibbon the pen name of James Leslie Mitchell 1901–1935 was a Scottish novelist and essayist best known for his powerful depictions of rural life and social change in early twentieth-century Scotland. His most celebrated work Sunset Song 1932 the first novel in the Scots Quair trilogy portrays the tensions between tradition and modernity through the life of a young woman in a farming community. Writing under both his real name and pseudonym Mitchell combined regional realism with broader political and historical concerns often addressing themes of class industrialization and identity. Despite his relatively short life his work has had a lasting impact on Scottish literature and is regarded as a significant contribution to modern British fiction. Hutchinson paperback

Major Spilsbury's account of his attempts to smuggle and run guns to southern Moroccan tribes outside of the control and authority of the Sultan in 1897 in breach of international and British domestic laws. Spilsbury argues that if the Sultan could not guarantee a foreigner's safely in the lands south of the Atlas mountains he should not claim to control them and he took it upon himself to negotiate directly with local leaders agreeing to supply them with arms. When Spilsbury tried to land his arms cargo in Mogador now Essaouria his men were met with hostile Moorish troops and he was forced to move away from the harbour leaving several of his crew on shore. In March 1898 Spilsbury left the Tourmaline and returned to London where The War Office suspended him from duty discharged him from the Army and charged him with illegally landing arms in Morocco. Subsequently acquitted by a jury of his peers he evaded arrest on a further charge by remaining outside of the jurisdiction. Spilsbury appears baffled in his conclusion that Morocco should be so resistant to colonisation. The appendix treats colonisation as inevitable and unashamedly motivated by access to Morocco's natural resources including gold. London; J. M. Dent & Co. 1906. hardcover
