rif. 76286London: John Murray 1887. Late Antiquity FINELY BOUND SET. Complete in eight volumes. Octavo 23 x 15 x 27cm. With a frontispiece etching of the author to volume I and one or two folding maps to each volume. In a handsome contemporary half tan calf with red and brown labels to spine lettered and decorated in gilt over matching brown cloth-covered sides edges and endpapers marbled. Crisp clean copies with small and discreet ink ownership bindings in excellent order gently aged with a few minor marks. Most attractive. Published sequentially in six volumes between 1776 and 1788 Gibbon's 'Decline and Fall' is universally acknowledged as an historiographical and literary giant of the English language. It has been read by historians of Rome and Byzantium ever since publication though Gibbon's pessimistic attitude is currently unfashionable amongst scholars of Late Antiquity. Nevertheless the breadth of his coverage and the depth of his knowledge remains unrivalled. London: John Murray, 1887 unknown

1983rif. 050164London: The Folio Society 1983. Hardcover. Near Fine/Slip-cased. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8th Printing from 2001. The books are near fine. The two slipcase have some marks and scuffs. Substantial postage. A superb eight volume edition of Gibbons History of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. First published in 1776 and completed in 1788. Edited and with introduction by Betty Radice. The text used is reproduced from the Everyman Edition 1910 published by J M Dent and Son. Edward Gibbon is one of the greatest of the historians of the Enlightenment. Two centuries of massive scholarship and constant intellectual evolution have inevitably left many marks on Roman Byzantine and even more on medieval European history. It remains a remarkable fact that anyone who wishes to study the later Roman or Byzantine Empire will still find Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire the best as well as the most readable narrative of it.
