1827réf. 322776London: Thomas M'Lean; James Goodwin; W. Sharpe and Son; G. and J. Robinson 1827. Hardcover. Very Good. 12 vols. IN THE ORIGINAL BOARDS. A complete set of twelve hardcover books bound in 1/4 brown cloth and the original plain boards. Very good condition across the set. Corners of boards are scuffed and lightly bumped. Some fairly mild abrasions spotting and creases to the paper spine labels. Pages are lightly foxed although there is heavier foxing on the frontispiece portrait of Gibbon in volume 1. Small closed tear in the folding map in volume 1. Early owner's neat signature on title page of volume 3; this volume's boards are slightly bowed. Edge of volume 5's back cover is lightly bumped. Small dent at bottom of volume 8's back cover; boards slightly bowed here as well. Otherwise a clean tight sturdy set. "A New Edition" as stated on the title page published in 1827 the first edition was published incrementally from 1776-1788. This copy of the set contains the bookseller ticket of Foyle's of London. The first two volumes contain folding maps. As issued in the original boards. Early 19th century British books were normally issued in plain bindings of cloth spines and paper-covered boards; the intent was that the buyer would have the books rebound in custom leather to their own liking. As a result books with the original publisher's bindings of plain boards are quite scarce. Thomas M'Lean; James Goodwin; W. Sharpe and Son; G. and J. Robinson hardcover
