Summary Archives held in institutions around the world hold a wealth of material but traditionally the fields of Classical and ancient Near Eastern archaeology have been slow to make use of such legacy data in their investigations. In recent years however this trend has begun to change and scholars increasingly recognize the importance of archival material to their research. Drawing directly on these trends this volume offers the first in-depth analysis of what it means to engage in archive archaeology and how it can influence understandings of both the ancient world and the recent past. Excavation historiographies and the formation of archaeological archives in the twentieth century are investigated in locations from across the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East with current understanding of sites such as Dura Europos or Palmyra being fundamentally reassessed in the light of the archival material. Crucially the volume contributions gathered here look to the future as well as to the past: archives are acknowledged as essential to cultural heritage preservation and restitution initiatives and chapters explore best practices as well as presenting some of the manifold potentials of archive and legacy data to future research. 2004" Although the book gives a detailed history of the Olympian Games and describes the organization, rules and kind of events that took place during the eleven centuries of their life, Varvitsiotes' book gives greater emphasis to the cultural aspects of athletics in ancient Greece, and how athletics influenced the Greeks' overall culture and, they in turn, were influenced by it. 2004The earliest Olympic games began more than twenty-five-hundred years ago. What were they like, how were they organized, who participated? Were ancient sports a means of preparing youth for warfare? In this lavishly illustrated book, a world expert on ancient Greek athletics provides the first comprehensive introduction to the subject, vividly describing ancient sporting events and games and exploring their impact on art, literature, and politics. Using a wide array of ancient sources, written and visual, and including recent archaeological discoveries, Stephen Miller reconstructs ancient Greek athletic festivals and the details of specific athletic events. He also explores broader themes, including the role of women in ancient athletics, the place of amateurism, and the relationship between athletic events and social and political life. A source of information and enjoyment for anyone interested in the history of athletics and the origins of the world's most famous sporting event. 1911Best.-Nr. 140945450Milwaukie: Published by the Author 1911. First edition. First edition. Signed by Olympia Brown with an extensive inscription in her hand on front free endpaper describing the circumstances that lead to the publication of the current work: "In 1911 the legislature of Wisconsin submitted the Woman's Suffrage Amendment to the voters. I telegraphed Mrs. Emma DeVoe to come and conduct the campaign. She came but circumstances prevented her from remaining. While there she suggested the preparation of these sketches as being more valuable for the purpose of sale to aid our treasury than a cookbook. Accordingly the sketches were hastily thrown together & with all their incompleteness ever given to the association as a slight help in paying the bills of the campaign."
