Is this merely a coincidence or a mesh of problems in dire need of a resolution, stratified throughout history from the past to present? If our answer entails resolving this mesh of problems on the scale of Istanbul, then we can certainly call for a common denominator through which diverse opinions and approaches can counter with one another. The Annual of Istanbul Studies thus begins its publishing life to compensate for this need in terms of modern scientific thought.

This is not a book on archaeology, nor, although it lays particular stress on the architecture, an architectural history of Istanbul. It is an attempt to present the urban history of a world-city called Istanbul, Constantinople, Byzantion in different periods of its history. It delineates historical circumstances, or sudden ruptures, but above all, it attempts to present this unique world-city as experienced by its citizens and visitors, and as imagined by the world at large. While recent researches on the topography, history and monuments of the city are integrated in the text, my intention is to present the essence of the historical image of Istanbul contextually within physical, social and cultural framework. I have no intention of breaking new ground on the topography of the city, but I wish to convey the terms of a unique human experience in one of the longest surviving cities of the world, built in a most beautiful and enchanting landscape. The great Byzantine scholar R. Janin speaks of various "visages" of the city composed through the rhythms of life or caprices of the emperors. Most of this intricate relationships created in millennia between men, site, and artifact are gone and difficult to visualize. In writing this urban history, while I try to remain objective, I know that I create a literary model using as reference the least changed of the historical elements, the surviving monuments, the site with its basic shape and articulations, and contemporary accounts -not necessarily sources of hard facts, but as primary expressions, reactions and emotions. Thus tryingto keep myself away, as far as possible, from speculation and methods of criminal fiction, I have delineated the history of this grandiose, dramatic and often cruel city of Istanbul

Edoardo de Nari, 1874-1954: The architect of changing times.= Edoardo de Nari, 1874-1954: Degisen zamanlarin mimari. The series of exhibitions, initiated by Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Istanbul Research Institute, on architects and city planners who have left their imprint on Istanbul, continued with Edoardo de Nari, one of the leading Italian architects active during the intriguing and colorful period of transition from the end of the Ottoman era to the first twenty-five years of the young Republic. The exhibition, compiled from the private archives of Büke Uras, as well as different collections, not only stood testimony to the interesting life and career of an architect's life between 1895 and 1954, but it also provided an architectural and social reading of the first half of the 20th century in Istanbul through a multifaceted individual; an Istanbul architect. Although Edoardo De Nari may have been neglected in the history of local architecture, he nonetheless stood out in the architecture of his period in Istanbul. He was gifted in many areas and possessed qualifications that allowed him to practice his professional career in foreign lands: architect, engineer, composer, world traveler, and, finally, politician. While revealing the real designer of a number of buildings whose architect remained unknown or ambiguous to date, the exhibition Architect of Changing Time: Edoardo De Nari also reflected, through the different styles of the architect, the aesthetic proclivities of a cosmopolitan upper class enjoying their final days in Istanbul.
