1951Best.-Nr. 1604641951. Commemorating the American fallen A compelling album apparently made by the family of a fallen serviceman and therefore unique commemorating Eisenhower's presentation of the Roll of Honor to St Paul's Cathedral. The roll lists the 28000 American soldiers stationed in Britain who gave their lives in the Second World War. The album includes large-format photographs of the military procession to the ceremony; attendees entering the cathedral including Churchill Mountbatten Attlee the Queen Mother and Princess Elizabeth Eisenhower and Curtis LeMay; photographs of the service including the congregation singing hymns and the sermon by the Archbishop of Canterbury; and Eisenhower leaving the Cathedral. The ceremony was held on Independence Day. Eisenhower delivered a message: "Each name inscribed in this book is a story of personal tragedy and a grieving family; a story repeated endlessly in white crosses girdling the globe. The Americans whose names here appear were part of the price that free men have been forced a second time to pay in this century to defend human liberty and rights". The album includes a copy of a page from the roll listing names from Hiltabidle to Hitchings - presumably the album was made by the family of someone listed there. We could trace no other similar album. In 1958 the American Memorial Chapel was completed in a part of the cathedral that a bomb had hit in 1940. The roll now resides there and a page is turned each day to show different names. Landscape quarto album 318 x 419 mm. Four letterpress leaves partly printed in gilt comprising title excerpt from the Archbishop of Canterbury's address Eisenhower's introduction to the Roll of Honour and copy of page from roll all with acetate covers. Tan leatherette front cover lettered in blind "Commemoration Service - St. Paul's Cathedral - July 4. 1951." cord-bound cord recently renewed 33 heavy card leaves with 28 mounted black and white silver gelatin press photographs 203 x 254 cm most captioned by hand. Binding neatly restored and consolidated the photographs in sharp unblemished condition slight discolouration around letterpress leaves. In very good condition. hardcover

1965Best.-Nr. 639641965. Signed. EISENHOWER Dwight D. Typed letter signed. Gettysburg: No publisher July 13 1965. Two sheets of letterhead measuring 7 by 10-1/2 inches. $2200.Delightfully conversational typed letter from Dwight D. Eisenhower to his friend Harry Anholt the long-time manager of DenverÕs Brown Palace Hotel regarding golf back maladies and the weather boldly initialed by Eisenhower. The letter typed on EisenhowerÕs personal stationery and addressed to ÒMr. Anholt Biltmore Hotel 43rd and Madison New York New York 10017Ó reads: ÒJuly 13 1965. Dear Harry: Some days ago through Arline and Mamie I learned that you experienced some back trouble that sent you to the hospital. Because I am uncertain at this moment as to your location I think I had better send this note to you at the Biltmore Hotel and ask that it be forwarded. I rather suspect that the difficulty you are now having is somewhat similar to the one I experienced about two years ago in California. One day in the middle of a golf game my back began to hurt and got worse as the game progressed. That afternoon I lay down to take a rest and found to my chagrin that I could not get up. I had quite a time and there was brought in for my use a special bed that had electric gadgets which could raise me up to a sitting position or raise both back and knees when I wanted to read. It at least helped me to get in and out of bed and no longer did I have to have Moaney in to help. The pain was really severe when he would try and help me get out of bed. The upshot was that I missed almost four weeks of golf-eight days of which were spent in bed! According to Mamie Arline said the doctors are just making up their minds whether or not to operate; indicating that your case is much more severe than mine because at least none of my doctors suggested any cutting. Of course it is always irksome to lie in bed but I imagine what bothers you most is the impossibility to get on the golf course and keep up with your work in the office. At least that was what I found bothered me. On the other side of the coin I am lazy and something of a loafer-a tendency that helps be whenever the doctors pin me in bed. After a long dry spell our section had one good rain here but we were so dry that in spite of the fact that the rain came just last week end we need some more right now. I read that New York likewise had a good rain but I doubt that it was enough to alleviate the terrible water shortage that seems to be plaguing New York City. Next Monday Mamie and I are taking off by train to northern Wisconsin where we expect to stay about a week or ten days. Both of us send our very best wishes for your quick and complete recovery and of course are sic affectionate regard to you both As ever signed D.E.Ó ÒMoaneyÓ mentioned in the letter is Sergeant John A. Moaney Jr. who was EisenhowerÕs personal aide from 1942 to 1969 and who served as a pallbearer at his funeral. With original envelope bearing Eisenhower Presidential franking stamp. Staple holes small stain on envelope. Fine condition. unknown

1946Best.-Nr. 149606Colonial Studios 1946. Black and white photograph of Winston Churchill delivering a speech before the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia on March 8 1946 with General Dwight D. Eisenhower seated to his left. Signed in the lower margin of the photograph "Winston S. Churchill" and "Dwight D. Eisenhower." Additionally signed by Virginia Governor William M. Tuck Lieutenant Governor of Virginia Lewis Preston Collins II and Field Marshal Henry Maitland Wilson. Three days after his famous 'Sinews of Peace Iron Curtain' speech at Westminster College in Fulton Missouri on March 5 1946 Churchill traveled to the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond Virginia where he gave an address to the joint houses of the Virginia General Assembly. Flanked by General Eisenhower and Field Marshal Wilson Churchill built upon his Iron Curtain message emphasizing the importance of post-war unity by drawing historical parallels with past conflicts such as the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. A resounding applause followed the conclusion of his speech: "It is in the years of peace that wars are prevented and that those foundations are laid upon which the noble structures of the future can be built. But peace will not be preserved without the virtues that make victory possible in war. Peace will not be preserved by pious sentiments expressed in terms of platitudes or by official grimaces and diplomatic correctitude however desirable these may be from time to time. It will not be preserved by casting aside in dangerous years the panoply of warlike strength. There must be earnest thought. There must also be faithful perseverance and foresight. Great Heart must have his sword and armor to guard the pilgrims on their way. Above all among the English-speaking peoples there must be the union of hearts based upon conviction and common ideals. That is what I offer. That is what I seek." After a series of boisterous chants Eisenhower also took to the podium and addressed the assembly: "'Of all the things that supported me through three and a half years of warfare on the European continent I know of no other single thing that was of greater moral benefit than the unwavering staunch indomitable courageous support of the Prime Minister of Great Britain. It is my earnest conviction that only history can measure even remotely the true value of the worth of the service he has rendered to all of us. But I am certain that in meetings such as this with the wholehearted welcome he finds in this city from my own countrymen to him he will gain some little measure of understanding in his own time of what we think of him." In near fine condition with lightly trimmed edges and some creasing to the borders. Triple matted and framed. The photograph measures 12 inches by 10 inches. The entire piece measures 20.25 inches by 17.5 inches. An exceptional signed photograph with a highly desirable assemblage of autographs. Winston Churchill’s oratory during the Second World War played a pivotal role in sustaining British morale and fortifying resistance against Nazi Germany. His speeches combined rhetorical mastery with psychological acuity transforming language into a strategic weapon of war. Addressing the nation during its darkest hours—such as after the fall of France in 1940—Churchill’s declarations of defiance “We shall fight on the beaches…” articulated not only military determination but also a collective moral resilience. His use of repetition cadence and vivid imagery appealed to both reason and emotion forging unity across class and political divisions. Beyond mere motivation Churchill’s rhetoric effectively redefined the narrative of the war: from one of imminent defeat to one of enduring struggle for freedom and civilization. By shaping public perception and maintaining confidence in ultimate victory his speeches became integral to Britain’s psychological endurance and international standing influencing Allied cohesion and laying the groundwork for eventual triumph over totalitarianism.
