1965ref. 639641965. Signed. EISENHOWER Dwight D. Typed letter signed. Gettysburg: No publisher July 13 1965. Two sheets of letterhead measuring 7 by 10-1/2 inches. $2200.Delightfully conversational typed letter from Dwight D. Eisenhower to his friend Harry Anholt the long-time manager of DenverÕs Brown Palace Hotel regarding golf back maladies and the weather boldly initialed by Eisenhower. The letter typed on EisenhowerÕs personal stationery and addressed to ÒMr. Anholt Biltmore Hotel 43rd and Madison New York New York 10017Ó reads: ÒJuly 13 1965. Dear Harry: Some days ago through Arline and Mamie I learned that you experienced some back trouble that sent you to the hospital. Because I am uncertain at this moment as to your location I think I had better send this note to you at the Biltmore Hotel and ask that it be forwarded. I rather suspect that the difficulty you are now having is somewhat similar to the one I experienced about two years ago in California. One day in the middle of a golf game my back began to hurt and got worse as the game progressed. That afternoon I lay down to take a rest and found to my chagrin that I could not get up. I had quite a time and there was brought in for my use a special bed that had electric gadgets which could raise me up to a sitting position or raise both back and knees when I wanted to read. It at least helped me to get in and out of bed and no longer did I have to have Moaney in to help. The pain was really severe when he would try and help me get out of bed. The upshot was that I missed almost four weeks of golf-eight days of which were spent in bed! According to Mamie Arline said the doctors are just making up their minds whether or not to operate; indicating that your case is much more severe than mine because at least none of my doctors suggested any cutting. Of course it is always irksome to lie in bed but I imagine what bothers you most is the impossibility to get on the golf course and keep up with your work in the office. At least that was what I found bothered me. On the other side of the coin I am lazy and something of a loafer-a tendency that helps be whenever the doctors pin me in bed. After a long dry spell our section had one good rain here but we were so dry that in spite of the fact that the rain came just last week end we need some more right now. I read that New York likewise had a good rain but I doubt that it was enough to alleviate the terrible water shortage that seems to be plaguing New York City. Next Monday Mamie and I are taking off by train to northern Wisconsin where we expect to stay about a week or ten days. Both of us send our very best wishes for your quick and complete recovery and of course are sic affectionate regard to you both As ever signed D.E.Ó ÒMoaneyÓ mentioned in the letter is Sergeant John A. Moaney Jr. who was EisenhowerÕs personal aide from 1942 to 1969 and who served as a pallbearer at his funeral. With original envelope bearing Eisenhower Presidential franking stamp. Staple holes small stain on envelope. Fine condition. unknown

1953ref. 425891New London Connecticut: General Dynamics Electric Boat 1953. Unbound. Near Fine. A collection of 50 black and white press photographs of the U.S.S. Nautilus measuring 8" x 10". Additionally included are a newspaper clipping and two programs discussing the ship. All items near fine with some edgewear. An archive of photographs and programs following the construction and later christening of the U.S.S. Nautilus the first nuclear powered submarine. The photographs are part of the public relations branch of General Dynamics Corporation's Electric Boat Division which was responsible for constructing the ship. A brochure from 1952 when construction began is entitled "The Beginning of an Era" and according to a printed note from the Chairman was "prepared to commemorate an occasion significant in history - the first application of atomic power to propulsion - in a submarine now to help preserve the peace." It continues "I am sure you share my pride that the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation was selected for this most important undertaking and I hope that you will find interest and pleasure in this brochure as a memento of the keel laying." The earliest photographs depict the keeling process and early construction including a photo of President Truman from the keel laying ceremony. In 1954 when the submarine was completed the christening ceremony was conducted by Mamie Eisenhower. A program from this ceremony is also featured here along with professional photographs from the event. The introduction of the program reads "January 21 1954 lives in history as the launching day of the world's first atomic powered vessel the submarine "Nautilus.'" It continues "we are particularly honored to have as our sponsor the First Lady of the Land Mrs. Dwight David Eisenhower." The photos show Mamie arriving by train the crowds surrounding the submarine and Mamie holding a bottle of champagne for the christening. One of these photos shows Mamie in a fur coat with the president of the Electric Boat Division showing her where to break the champagne bottle. Other images show the launched submarine departing the dock and Mamie touching the hands of people in the crowd and handing roses to children. The use of nuclear propulsion allowed the vessel to stay submerged longer and thus it was able to travel to places "previously beyond the limits of submarines." In August of 1958 it was the first vessel to complete a "submerged transit of the North Pole." According to the National Park Service "Nautilus was decommissioned in 1980 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1982." An interesting collection detailing the early days of the first atomic powered submarine. General Dynamics Electric Boat unknown
ref. 384129Hardcover. Very Good. Oblong quarto. Stiiff black leather blank album. Joints and spine eroded but sound very good internally about fine. Photo album with approximately 165 well-composed images. Various sizes mostly two three or four to a page. Circa 1945. The album consists largely of images of Washington D.C. New York City Gettysburg Philadelphia and Valley Forge with a reasonable selection of images of sailors on leave. In Washington many of the photographs are of government buildings and monuments including some taken from the Washington Monument cherry blossoms and in the other cities of various landmark buildings. Among the Washington photos are several from a homecoming parade for General Eisenhower with a couple of him waving from a jeep and another pair of close-ups of him speaking. The photographs were taken by Petty Officer Hugh W. Brannon of Atlanta. Brannon spent thirty years working for Eastman Kodak and during the War was a photographer assigned to the Staff of Secretary of the Navy James V. Forrestal where he screened all Navy combat footage for the Secretary and Chief of Naval Operations Fleet Admiral Ernest J. King. During the Korean War he was assigned to the Atlantic Fleet Camera Party and filmed all Developmental Weapons Tests for the Bureau of Ships. As might be expected from the photographers bona fides the images in this album are of an unusually fine quality to be found in a vernacular photo album. hardcover
