Susan Elaine Eisenhower born December 31 1951 is an American consultant author and expert on international security space policy energy and relations between the Russian Federation and the United States of America. She is the daughter of John Eisenhower and the granddaughter of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower is President of the Eisenhower Group Inc which provides strategic counsel on political business and public affairs projects. She has consulted for Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 companies doing business in the emerging markets of the former Soviet Union and for a number of major institutions engaged in the energy field. She is also Chairman of Leadership and Public Policy Programs and Chairman Emeritus of the Eisenhower Institute a think tank based in Washington D.C. and in Gettysburg Pennsylvania owned and operated by Gettysburg College. Eisenhower served as the president of the Eisenhower Institute twice and later as chair. During that time she became known for her work in the former Soviet Union and in the energy field. In January 2010 Secretary of Energy Steven Chu appointed Eisenhower to serve on the Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future which has been asked to develop a long-term solution for safely managing the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle. Derived from a Kirkus review: A granddaughter of the 34th president celebrates his life and accomplishments. The author who published a memoir Mrs. Ike 1996 about her grandmother turns her attention to her grandfather in this amalgam of biography memoir and history. She celebrates his remarkable life noting his humility and "intellectual honesty" and how he was "transparent and accountable" to the public and possessed a "determination to put the country first." The author is clearly determined to remind readers of his many accomplishments—not only in World War II he organized D-Day among many other operations but during the eight years of his presidency 1953-1961. She credits him for laying the groundwork for civil rights—e.g. he sent the 101st Airborne to Little Rock to facilitate school integration—balancing budgets keeping us out of war working hard to get the U.S. into space refusing to attack his critics in public and declining to diminish himself by responding to Sen. Joseph McCarthy and later to the Democrats who tried to use the early Soviet space achievements for a political advantage. She shows him as an empathetic family man with a strong moral compass. In the epilogue the author attacks the tribalism poisoning our current political climate. A patent paean to a beloved grandfather and his military political and family achievements. This book focuses on Eisenhower's conduct of the war and provides an extensively documented analysis of the political ramifications of the course of the war and Eisenhower's decisions. Dwight David Eisenhower II born March 31 1948 is an American author public policy fellow professor at the University of Pennsylvania and eponym of the U.S. presidential retreat Camp David. He is the grandson of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and First Lady Mamie Eisenhower and a son-in-law of President Richard Nixon and First Lady Pat Nixon. He was a teaching adjunct and public policy fellow at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania author and co-chair of the Foreign Policy Research Institute's History Institute for Teachers. From 2001 to 2003 he was editor of Orbis a quarterly published by the institute. Eisenhower was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in history in 1987 for his work Eisenhower At War 1943-1945 about the Allied leadership during World War II. He was the host of a public television series called The Whole Truth with David Eisenhower distributed by American Public Television. Derived from a Kirkus review: The younger Eisenhower has spent some six years on this project covering only a three-year period in Ike's career. Eisenhower: At War is a work of dignified completely researched history. Three decades after Eisenhower's presidency a spate of books is being published on issues of his era or about the man. David's view is that Eisenhower's experiences in WW II were the clay he molded into his overall world view which is ultimately crucial to the understanding of his presidency. Eisenhower saw Russia's isolation as a danger to the postwar world and spent the next 15 years of his public life attempting to defuse the Cold War. When his attempts failed he warned his citizens of the consequences especially as they related to the "military-industrial complex." David Eisenhower's special status in being able to call upon his own father for firsthand information and on his father-in-law Richard Nixon's expertise in foreign matters has helped him to produce a very solid work. It is a secondary source but his interpretations are full of acumen and he doesn't shrink from uncomfortable topics such as Eisenhower's decision to allow Montgomery to go ahead with his Market Garden attack even when Ike knew that it was doomed in order to finally dispose of Monty's challenges to his authority. Nepotism in the pursuit of biography is no vice. Random House hardcover

Roald Zinnurovich Sagdeev born 26 December 1932 is a Russian expert in plasma physics and a former director of the Space Research Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He was also a science advisor to the Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev. Sagdeev graduated from Moscow State University. He is a member of both the Russian Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. He has worked at the University of Maryland College Park since 1989 in the University of Maryland College of Computer Mathematical and Natural Sciences. He is also currently a Senior Advisor at the Albright Stonebridge Group a global strategy firm where he assists clients with issues involving Russia and countries in the former Soviet Union. Sagdeev was married to and divorced from Susan Eisenhower granddaughter of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Sagdeev was the recipient of the 2003 Carl Sagan Memorial Award and the James Clerk Maxwell Prize for Plasma Physics 2001. At the age of 35 he was one of the youngest persons ever elected as a full academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. From 1970 until 1973 he worked at the Institute of Physics of High Temperatures of the USSR Academy of Sciences. His work on thermonuclear fusion at the Institute of Atomic Energy and the Institute of Nuclear Physics have won recognition. Derived from a Kirkus review: The West's understanding of science under communism is painted in broad strokes: the horrors of Lysenkoism the house arrest of Peter Kapitsa the banishment of Sakharov and innumerable accounts of persecution and consignment to asylums or gulags for dissidents and even nondissidents if they were Jews. Sagdeev's story is different. Born in 1932 he was the gifted son of Tatar parents his father having been plucked from the peasantry to become a mathematician and teacher. Sagdeev graduated from Moscow State University and proved worthy of mentorship under the likes of Lev Landau Igor Kurchatov and Kapitsa himself. What follows next is a career line in which Sagdeev demonstrated his gifts for science and administration first in research on controlled fusion—an area where Russian research has been outstanding—and then in space science. Sagdeev was director of the Space Research Institute in Moscow—the civilian space agency. There and in his earlier positions in the academic city founded in Novosibirsk Sagdeev fought a constant battle with the military-industrial complex party functionaries and the KGB. Sheer wit intelligence and bravado enabled him to win more often than not—over assorted villains with nicknames like the ``Big Hammer'' or ``Big Oleg.'' This fighting within the system opened the way to international communications travel and scientific collaboration—a pre- glasnost glasnost. It makes for remarkable reading often laced with insights into Russian thinking and humor. It is not without interest that Sagdeev's editor and the cause of his ``heart'' drain to America where he teaches physics at Univ. of Maryland is his wife—Susan Eisenhower granddaughter of the man who coined the term military-industrial complex. Eisenhower served as the president of the Eisenhower Institute twice and later as Chairman. During that time she became known for her work in the former Soviet Union and in the energy field. The author President Eisenhower's granddaughter fell in love with the head of the Russian space program. The book is the story of her love affair and eventual marriage to a member of President Gorbachev's inner circle and head of the Soviet civilian space program. These events happened during the breakup of the Soviet Union and the end of Soviet communism. Susan Eisenhower's memoir begins with a brief introduction of her early life. She recounts what it was like to grow up as the granddaughter of "Ike" Eisenhower the forty-ninth president of the United States; her short but unhappy marriage; and her problems as a single mother to three daughters. She goes on to describe her job as a journalist for a local newspaper and then her role in foreign affairs and marketing communications for several companies. Finally Susan explains how she came to be the president of the Eisenhower Group Inc. in 1986. Also in this first section she gives the reader a thorough background on the Cold War Gorbachev's rise to power and the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union. The following three sections chronicle the developing relationship between Susan Eisenhower and Soviet scientist Roald Sagdeev as well as the problems that they face professionally and personally. The KGB along with many others would not have approved of this king of relationship. Susan's situation was not much different than Roald's. She was under tremendous pressure from friends to end her relationship with Roald. She was afraid of dishonoring the memory of her grandfather but in the end Susan and Roald risked everything to be together. As a chronicle of an "ill-fated" relationship set against the backdrop of the Cold War Susan Eisenhower's memoir is an example of courage and devotion against tremendous odds. Eisenhower had two careers: before he was one of America's most popular presidents he was its greatest military commander. His military career lasted much longer and according to John it was far more important to him personally. Nobody is in a better position to tell the story of General Ike than John who was by his side for much of it and who rose to the rank of Brigadier General before retiring to write seminal and bestselling works of military history. GENERAL IKE is a definitive revealing and brilliantly crafted study of the right stuff of leadership. Great leaders bring out the best in the people around them and Ike was no exception. Drawing on scenes witnessed by few others and comments given him in private by his father John Eisenhower shows how his father's keen mind great sense of the strengths of others and perseverance in the face of all duties combined to bring America to victory. From Wikipedia: "John Sheldon Doud Eisenhower born August 3 1922 is the son of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his wife Mamie. He is a retired United States Army Brigadier General and the author of several books of military history. He served as the U.S. Ambassador to Belgium from 1969 to 1971. John Eisenhower was born on August 3 1922 in Denver Denver County Colorado to future U.S. President and United States Army General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower and his wife Mamie. John Eisenhower was the second child of Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower. Their first son Doud Dwight known affectionately as "Icky" died in 1921 at age 3 after contracting scarlet fever. John Eisenhower like his father attended the United States Military Academy graduating on June 6 1944 the day of the Normandy landings which his father was commanding. John Eisenhower served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War remaining on active duty until 1963; then serving in the U.S. Army Reserve until retirement in 1975 attaining the rank of brigadier general. A decorated soldier Eisenhower found his World War II military career thwarted by fears for his safety and concern from the top brass that his death or capture would be a distraction to his father the Supreme Allied Commander. This issue arose again in 1952 when Major Eisenhower was assigned to fight in a combat unit in Korea while his father ran for President. After a short stint in combat with an infantry battalion he was reassigned to the safety of division headquarters. In 2008 he wrote about this experience in an opinion piece in the New York Times entitled "Presidential Children Don t Belong in Battle". During his father's presidency John Eisenhower served as Assistant Staff Secretary in the White House on the Army's General Staff and in the White House as assistant to General Andrew Goodpaster. In the administration of President Richard Nixon who had been his father's Vice President he served as U.S. Ambassador to Belgium. In 1972 President Nixon appointed Eisenhower Chairman of the Interagency Classification Review Committee. In 1975 he served President Gerald Ford as chairman of the President's Advisory Committee on Refugees. As a military historian Eisenhower has written several of his books including The Bitter Woods a study of the Battle of the Bulge. In a New York Times review of So Far from God a history of the U.S. -Mexican War Stephen W. Sears remarked that Eisenhower "writes briskly and authoritatively and his judgments are worth reading." John Eisenhower wrote the foreword to Borrowed Soldiers a book by Mitchell Yockelson of the U.S. National Archives. Eisenhower also wrote the forward to Kenneth W. Rendell's book "Politics War and Personality: 50 Iconic Documents of World War II." The city of Marshfield Missouri chose Eisenhower as a 2008 honoree of the Edwin P. Hubble Medal of Initiative. His grandson Merrill Eisenhower Atwater spoke on his behalf at Marshfield's annual Cherry Blossom Festival. The medal recognizes. Free Press hardcover

From Wikipedia: "The Public Papers of the Presidents contain the papers and speeches of the Presidents of the United States that were issued by the Office of the Press Secretary. The series constitutes a special edition of the Federal Register. The Public Papers of the Presidents series was begun in 1957 in response to a recommendation of the National Historical Publications Commission. An extensive compilation of messages and papers of the Presidents covering the period 1789 to 1897 was assembled by James D. Richardson and published under congressional authority between 1896 and 1899. Since then various private compilations have been issued but there was no uniform publication comparable to the Congressional Record or the United States Supreme Court Reports. Many Presidential papers could be found only in the form of mimeographed White House releases or as reported in the press. The Commission therefore recommended the establishment of an official series in which Presidential writings addresses and remarks of a public nature could be made available. The Commission s recommendation was incorporated in regulations of the Administrative Committee of the Federal Register issued under section 6 of the Federal Register Act 44 U.S.C. 1506 which may be found in title 1 part 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations." The Public Papers series is compiled and published by the Office of the Federal Register National Archives and Records Administration. Each volume generally covers a 6-month period of a given administration and presents content in chronological order with headings providing the dates of the documents or events. In instances when the release date differs from the date of the document itself the date of public release is shown in the textnote. Remarks are checked against an audio recording if available or read aloud against official transcripts if no audio source is available and issued documents are checked against the original with exacting attention paid to preserving the integrity of the signed document. Textnotes and cross references are provided by the editors for purposes of identification or clarity usually of notable people referred to by the President or others participating in an event. Speeches are assumed to have been delivered in Washington DC unless otherwise indicated in the item heading. The times noted are assumed to be local times. All materials printed in full text in the book are indexed in the subject and name indexes and listed in the document categories list. With few exceptions deceased people are not indexed by name. The notes are intended for the general reader and specific criteria govern decisions about inclusion in or exclusion from the note with an eye toward keeping references standardized succinct and useful. Dwight David "Ike" Eisenhower born David Dwight Eisenhower; October 14 1890 - March 28 1969 was an American military officer and statesman who served as the 34th president of the United States from 1953 to 1961. During World War II he served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe and achieved the five-star rank as General of the Army. Eisenhower planned and supervised two of the most consequential military campaigns of World War II: Operation Torch in the North Africa campaign in 1942-1943 and the D-Day invasion of Normandy in 1944. After the war he served as Army Chief of Staff 1945-1948 as president of Columbia University 1948-1953 and as the first Supreme Commander of NATO 1951-1952. In 1952 Eisenhower entered the presidential race as a Republican to block the isolationist foreign policies of Senator Robert A. Taft who opposed NATO and wanted no foreign entanglements. Eisenhower won that election and the 1956 election in landslides both times defeating Adlai Stevenson II. Following the presidency Eisenhower moved to the place where he and Mamie had spent much of their post-war time a working farm adjacent to the battlefield at Gettysburg Pennsylvania. In December 1999 he was listed on Gallup's List of Most Widely Admired People of the 20th century. President Eisenhower here tells a number of stories for the simple pleasure of telling them. In warm and personal terms he writes about his life his acquaintances both celebrated and little known and the history that unfolded before his eyes. In anecdote after anecdote we learn about life at West Point in turn-of-the-century Kansas in an "ordinary" but remarkable family. His storytelling suggests what it was like to grow up and go to school at a time when the wild west had just become the rural west when the frontier was his home town. It awakened the dreams of adventure in a boy's imagination--and carried him from the wrong side of the tracks in Abilene to the leadership of a great alliance and military expedition a great university and a great nation. The young Eisenhower's dreams he thought could probably best be realized at Annapolis. And yet--through a fortuitous turn of events--the future naval officer settled in at West Point. This is a chronicle that now belongs to history and the author has done his duty in CRUSADE IN EUROPE MANDATE FOR CHANGE and WAGING PEACE THE WHITE HOUSE YEARS. This book is written for fun--as he remembers his tour of duty in the Canal Zone life with his young wife Mamie and how on patrol in the tropical terrain he was tutored in Clausewitz Tacitus and Plato by his mentor a little known and wonderful general named Fox Conner. He recalls his first encounter with a spirited colonel George Patton and his appointment later as aide to the already controversial general Douglas MacArthur. Roosevelt Churchill Zhukov Marshall Bradley SHAPE TORCH Columbia NATO--the men and events and institutions that have become household words are touched upon here and illuminated as are the lesser known people and places in a peaceful man's peacetime existence.
