Operation Overlord was the codename for the Battle of Normandy the Allied operation that launched the successful invasion of German-occupied Western Europe during World War II. The operation was launched on 6 June 1944 with the Normandy landings. A 1200-plane airborne assault preceded an amphibious assault involving more than 5000 vessels. Nearly 160000 troops crossed the English Channel on 6 June and more than two million Allied troops were in France by the end of August. The Falaise Pocket or Battle of the Falaise Pocket German: Kessel von Falaise; 1221 August 1944 was the decisive engagement of the Battle of Normandy in the Second World War. A pocket was formed around Falaise Calvados in which the German Army Group B with the 7th Army and the Fifth Panzer Army formerly Panzergruppe West were encircled by the Western Allies. The battle is also referred to as the Battle of the Falaise Gap after the corridor which the Germans sought to maintain to allow their escape. The battle resulted in the destruction of most of Army Group B west of the Seine which opened the way to Paris and the Franco-German border for the Allied armies on the Western Front. The Battle of the Bulge also known as the Ardennes Counteroffensive was the last major German offensive campaign on the Western Front during World War II and took place from 16 December 1944 to 25 January 1945. It was launched through the densely forested Ardennes region of Wallonia in eastern Belgium northeast France and Luxembourg towards the end of the war in Europe. The offensive was intended to stop Allied use of the Belgian port of Antwerp and to split the Allied lines allowing the Germans to encircle and destroy four Allied armies and force the Western Allies to negotiate a peace treaty in the Axis powers' favor. The eyes of the world are upon you." Of those 1426 copies the first 25 were bound in full red morocco leather and put aside for Eisenhower's personal use. Edgar N. Eisenhower 19 January 1889 - 12 July 1971 was a lawyer and the older brother of Dwight D. Eisenhower. The two brothers were known as Big Ike Edgar and Little Ike Dwight with Edgar eventually dropping the nickname. While Dwight's golf game would garner a great deal of attention and he became a most important person in the transition of golf from play to a sport Edgar was the much better golfer winning tournaments over a 20 year span. Edgar was known as a shoot-from-the-hip ultraconservative and a vocal critic of his brother the president. Edgar criticized Ike's budgets policies and judicial nominations. When the press asked Ike about the criticism he smiled and responded that Edgar had been "criticizing me since I was 5 years old." Ike's touching inscription in this book in just a few words perfectly captures their relationship. Doubleday & Company, Inc. hardcover books

1953ref. 131321953. Eisenhower Dwight D. The President's First Birthday in the White House 1953 commemorates Eisenhower's first birthday after assuming office as the 34th President of the United States. Produced during the first year of an administration led by the former Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II the plate explicitly associates Eisenhower with "love and peace" through a Pennsylvania Dutch intertwined dove motif. Its inscription places those themes within White House presentation culture at the beginning of his presidency when Eisenhower's military reputation and the Cold War pursuit of peace were central elements of his public image. Presidential commemorative china plate dated October 1953 approximately 10 1/2 inches in diameter with gold rim. The face bears an intertwined dove design accompanied by the inscription "The President's First Birthday in the White House" and Eisenhower's printed signature. The reverse explains the imagery: "This plate commemorates President Eisenhower's first birthday in the White House. The Pennsylvania Dutch symbol of the intertwined dove signifies love and peace for which our President firmly stands." The inscriptions identify the object specifically with Eisenhower's first presidential birthday rather than with a general White House commemorative occasion. Eisenhower entered the White House in January 1953 after a military career culminating in his command of the Allied invasion of Western Europe and the plate was issued during the first year in which that wartime commander occupied the presidency. Its dove emblem and accompanying explanation record the language of peace attached to Eisenhower's presidential image during the early Cold War. In excellent condition. A dated White House presentation object preserving the imagery and language selected to commemorate Eisenhower's first birthday as president. unknown books
