1953réf. 234931953. Postwar Pacific shipwreck salvage photo archive depicting named crewmen and firsthand recovery work aboard the wrecked steam-powered Liberty ship SS Quartette at Pearl and Hermes Atoll 1952-1953. Photos record the salvage-crew point of view: men are identified by name operations are captioned in plain working language and the broken ship is recorded from alongside above and within the wreck itself. The wreck is described "The deck torn like paper by the storm." The archive preserves the world of postwar maritime recovery where wartime-built cargo vessels still carried American trade across remote Pacific routes and salvage depended on small boats improvised rigging and dangerous work on unstable steel. Photo archive of 24 silver gelatin photographs mounted to album leaves each approximately 4 x 5 inches Pearl and Hermes Atoll and open Pacific waters circa 1952-1953. Captions identify the subject as "The wreck of the SS Quartette" and name specific operations including "Running the gape in the mud between bow and center sections" "Up goes the compressor" "Returning one of the generators to the ship" and "The work goes on all day and at night they rig lights." The ship appears split into bow center and fantail sections with captions marking "No. 1 hole from sea ward" "Looking down no. 2 hole" "The fantail and center section" "The bow from the boat" and "The deck torn like paper by the storm." Named men include Lt. Hill Capt. Tiernan Chappell Amos Burnett DeArcy Hughes Kirby Snow Grassnickel Gator and Ashburn; several pose or work near life rings lettered "S.S. Quartette Wilmington Del." Crews haul a compressor by boom move generators lower men into workboats stand on torn deck plating and work beside open holds twisted railings broken ladders and hull sections still taking heavy surf. Liberty ships were built quickly during World War II to keep Allied supply lines moving and hundreds remained in postwar service carrying commercial cargo across routes that still depended on wartime hulls crews and equipment. The Quartette ran aground at Pearl and Hermes Atoll in December 1952 after navigational error placed her on the reef; salvage efforts recovered what could be removed before storms and surf destroyed the ship further and forced abandonment. Album leaves with edge chipping cracking and corner wear; photographs with light fading surface wear and minor creasing; overall in good condition. The archive offers close documentation of Pacific salvage work before the wreck became a submerged maritime site within what is now PapahÄnaumokuÄkea Marine National Monument. unknown books

Lederer offered Wright access to his ""vast collection of detective fiction.É Wright then read all of the authors of crime fiction old and newÉ and decided he could do better"" Backer Mystery Movie Series 5-6. As Wright began working on Benson Murder Case the first Philo Vance novel he asked Lederer a member of the prestigious Manhattan Chess Club to arrange a meeting with Alexander Alekhine who became the Fourth World Champion of Chess in 1927. Wright used that meeting to gain background for Philo Vance's talent for solving chess-related murders. In 1933 New Yorker magazine reported that Lederer ""gave S. The ""berbrettl movement"" of Wright's inscription highlights a type of literary cabaret popular in Berlin at the turn of the century; ""hopatcong"" likely refers to an area not far from New York City. The two men shared a keen interest in chess and Lake Hopatcong was the center for major chess tournaments in the 1920s including one in 1926 won by the chess champion defeated by Alekhine in 1927. A suspect in The 'Canary' Murder Case the second Philo Vance novel complains of getting ticketed for speeding while ""driving down to Hopatcong.""Text fine lightest edge-wear faint toning to spine. 1887réf. 417304Fitchburg Mass. 1887. Unbound. Very Good. Approximately 9" x 14.5". Old folds with neat professional reinforcement on the verso small chips and tears in the margins mostly at the corners a sound and very good example. Interesting political broadside from a little-known and relatively short-lived progressive party that was interested in printing money in order to buy land for poor people between the towns of Fitchburg and Leominster in order to make it a single city. The dating of the broadside is a little confusing: dated in 1885 but then mentions meetings in 1886 and 1887 the one in 1887 seemingly anticipates a meeting in October of 1887. One statement notes: "Our party point and plan is to improve strengthen and build up the government and remove the burden of taxes from the people and ever stand ready to receive any good move come before them and have women a chance to vote." 1934réf. 83668New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1934. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First edition. A very good copy with some smudging and light staining in a supplied but sympathetic very good price-clipped dust jacket with slight internal stains. Inscribed by the author: "To Dr. Hugh Stott Taylor With great appreciation for his gracious assistance and with warm personal regards. S.S. Van Dine." The English-born Taylor was a chemist who spent much of his life at Princeton and who in World War II played a prominent role in the American scientific effort directing a number of research projects and contributing to the development of the atomic bomb with his discovery of the most effective catalyst for producing heavy water. He was knighted by both the Queen and the Pope in the same month. A Chair in chemistry is named for him at Princeton. The inscription would seem to indicate that Taylor provided advice to Van Dine about the novel or at least to Willard Huntington Wright as Van Dine was a pseudonym. A Philo Vance novel filmed in 1935 with Paul Lukas as Vance starring opposite Rosalind Russell in one of her earliest roles. Charles Scribner's Sons hardcover books
