1930ref. 33470New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1930. 1930. First edition. This is the so-called "First Issue" with only a single date 1930 on the copyright page. Otto Penzler in his Descriptive Bibliography on S. S. Van Dine says "The capital letter "A" must appear on the copyright page. The "A" was dropped from all subsequent printings the method by which Scribner's identified its first printings from 1930 to 1972." Fine bright tight copy with all lettering on the cloth bright and un-chipped in a fine dust jacket with two tiny closed tears at head of spine. Philo Vance's elaborate murder investigation takes place in a museum of Egyptology. There is a great deal of material on ancient Egyptian art. An exceptional copy and certainly this state is much scarcer than the variant with two dates on the copyright page although the variant state is also scarce. Charles Scribner's Sons, 1930. hardcover

1864ref. 42241Boston 1864. Three printed broadside certifications completed in manuscript each about 8" x 13" and signed by Prize Commissioner John Lovell each attesting to his examination of three witnesses in the case of the CSS Georgia "a vessel taken as prize and brought into the port of Boston." Each witness is examined "upon the Standing Interrogatories established by this Court." Attached to each certification is a "true copy" of each witness's answers to those interrogatories signed and attested. Each document attached with a green ribbon at top margin. Very Good. The depositions include those of Frith B. Atkinson a crew member aboard the USS Niagara 6 pp.; E. McElmell who claims a share in the prize 3 pp.; and William Richardson from Liverpool who was aboard the prize "Georgia" when it was taken 10 pp. with folio manuscript document folded to 4pp each page 8-1/2" x 13-1/4" comprising testimony of a Liverpool Broker for the sale of ships. He discusses his examination of the Georgia "then lying in the Birkenhead docks." The CSS Georgia was originally built as a fast merchantman named 'Japan'. The Confederate States purchased it in 1863 at Dumbarton Scotland. The ship was outfitted with guns and commissioned as the CSS Georgia under the command of William Lewis Maury. She captured nine prizes but was sold in June 1864 to a Liverpool merchant in spite of protests from the United States Minister to Great Britain. The ship returned to sea in August 1864 and was captured by the US Navy frigate Niagara off Portugal. She was then sent to Boston and sold as a lawful prize. unknown

ref. 50076Elkin Mathews & Marrot. London. 1930 First edition thus. Roy8vo 36pp. Hardcover in original cream pigskin with an abstract design of blue and black onlays and is lightly soiled with a darker mark on the lower spine being slightly splayed as well for reasons best known to specialist collectors internally this unusual book is comprised of Kelmscott hand-made paper that is clean and unfoxed with the requisite uneven fore-edges. Number 272 of only 300 copies ever produced with a lengthy introduction by D.H Lawrence this "is a story within a story contained within Dostoevsky's 1880 novel The Brothers Karamazov. It is recited by Ivan Karamazov during a conversation with his brother Alexei a novice monk about the possibility of a personal and benevolent God". This important original translation was made by Samuel S. Koteliansky a famous Ukrainian translator of Russian literature into English. Chekov was another who benefitted from his support as well as Dostoevsky and Rozanov amongst others being the manager of the prominent literary journal The Adelphi that published works of Lawrence Katherine Mansfield and even Dylan Thomas in the rarified world of mid-20th century English letters together with Leonard and Virginia Woolf. Hence the prominence of his name on the front board under the title and geometric pattern. Obviously extremely scarce anywhere in the world. Elkin, Mathews & Marrot. London. 1930 (First edition thus) hardcover
