1864réf. 42241Boston 1864. Three printed broadside certifications completed in manuscript each about 8" x 13" and signed by Prize Commissioner John Lovell each attesting to his examination of three witnesses in the case of the CSS Georgia "a vessel taken as prize and brought into the port of Boston." Each witness is examined "upon the Standing Interrogatories established by this Court." Attached to each certification is a "true copy" of each witness's answers to those interrogatories signed and attested. Each document attached with a green ribbon at top margin. Very Good. The depositions include those of Frith B. Atkinson a crew member aboard the USS Niagara 6 pp.; E. McElmell who claims a share in the prize 3 pp.; and William Richardson from Liverpool who was aboard the prize "Georgia" when it was taken 10 pp. with folio manuscript document folded to 4pp each page 8-1/2" x 13-1/4" comprising testimony of a Liverpool Broker for the sale of ships. He discusses his examination of the Georgia "then lying in the Birkenhead docks." The CSS Georgia was originally built as a fast merchantman named 'Japan'. The Confederate States purchased it in 1863 at Dumbarton Scotland. The ship was outfitted with guns and commissioned as the CSS Georgia under the command of William Lewis Maury. She captured nine prizes but was sold in June 1864 to a Liverpool merchant in spite of protests from the United States Minister to Great Britain. The ship returned to sea in August 1864 and was captured by the US Navy frigate Niagara off Portugal. She was then sent to Boston and sold as a lawful prize. unknown

réf. 50076Elkin Mathews & Marrot. London. 1930 First edition thus. Roy8vo 36pp. Hardcover in original cream pigskin with an abstract design of blue and black onlays and is lightly soiled with a darker mark on the lower spine being slightly splayed as well for reasons best known to specialist collectors internally this unusual book is comprised of Kelmscott hand-made paper that is clean and unfoxed with the requisite uneven fore-edges. Number 272 of only 300 copies ever produced with a lengthy introduction by D.H Lawrence this "is a story within a story contained within Dostoevsky's 1880 novel The Brothers Karamazov. It is recited by Ivan Karamazov during a conversation with his brother Alexei a novice monk about the possibility of a personal and benevolent God". This important original translation was made by Samuel S. Koteliansky a famous Ukrainian translator of Russian literature into English. Chekov was another who benefitted from his support as well as Dostoevsky and Rozanov amongst others being the manager of the prominent literary journal The Adelphi that published works of Lawrence Katherine Mansfield and even Dylan Thomas in the rarified world of mid-20th century English letters together with Leonard and Virginia Woolf. Hence the prominence of his name on the front board under the title and geometric pattern. Obviously extremely scarce anywhere in the world. Elkin, Mathews & Marrot. Octavo contemporary three-quarter green crushed morocco elaborately gilt-decorated spine raised bands decorative endpapers top edge gilt. $1400.Third edition of the first Philo Vance novel by legendary critic and editor Willard Wright under the pseudonym of S.S.Van Dine a Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone mystery a splendid presentation copy inscribed by him to his close friend ""To Norbert L. Lederer. In memory of Hopatcong and the Uberbrettl movementÑthe place and the subject which resulted in our friendship. S.S. Van Dine New York.""Lederer the recipient of this distinctive copy was a close friend of Wright who published his Philo Vance series under the pseudonym of S.S. Van Dine. When Wright was ordered to take a break from overwork Lederer stepped in and told his friend to instead ""devote his life to writing crime novels"" Sanchez Jose Raul Capablanca 276. Lederer offered Wright access to his ""vast collection of detective fiction.É Wright then read all of the authors of crime fiction old and newÉ and decided he could do better"" Backer Mystery Movie Series 5-6. As Wright began working on Benson Murder Case the first Philo Vance novel he asked Lederer a member of the prestigious Manhattan Chess Club to arrange a meeting with Alexander Alekhine who became the Fourth World Champion of Chess in 1927. Wright used that meeting to gain background for Philo Vance's talent for solving chess-related murders. In 1933 New Yorker magazine reported that Lederer ""gave S. S.Van Dine the chess and mathematical dope for The Bishop Murder Case.""When Wright began ""crafting his influential theory of detective fiction he drafted several story outlines and submitted three to Maxwell Perkins at Scribner's promptly receiving a contract."" Benson Murder Case launched ""what Haycraft has called the ""Golden AgeÉ Van Dine's place in the history of the American detective story is secure and important"" Reilly 1415. From the library of Norbert L. Lederer with his bookplate. The ""berbrettl movement"" of Wright's inscription highlights a type of literary cabaret popular in Berlin at the turn of the century; ""hopatcong"" likely refers to an area not far from New York City. The two men shared a keen interest in chess and Lake Hopatcong was the center for major chess tournaments in the 1920s including one in 1926 won by the chess champion defeated by Alekhine in 1927. A suspect in The 'Canary' Murder Case the second Philo Vance novel complains of getting ticketed for speeding while ""driving down to Hopatcong.""Text fine lightest edge-wear faint toning to spine. 1887réf. 417304Fitchburg Mass. 1887. Unbound. Very Good. Approximately 9" x 14.5". Old folds with neat professional reinforcement on the verso small chips and tears in the margins mostly at the corners a sound and very good example. Interesting political broadside from a little-known and relatively short-lived progressive party that was interested in printing money in order to buy land for poor people between the towns of Fitchburg and Leominster in order to make it a single city. The dating of the broadside is a little confusing: dated in 1885 but then mentions meetings in 1886 and 1887 the one in 1887 seemingly anticipates a meeting in October of 1887. One statement notes: "Our party point and plan is to improve strengthen and build up the government and remove the burden of taxes from the people and ever stand ready to receive any good move come before them and have women a chance to vote." 1934réf. 83668New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1934. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First edition. A very good copy with some smudging and light staining in a supplied but sympathetic very good price-clipped dust jacket with slight internal stains. Inscribed by the author: "To Dr. Hugh Stott Taylor With great appreciation for his gracious assistance and with warm personal regards. S.S. Van Dine." The English-born Taylor was a chemist who spent much of his life at Princeton and who in World War II played a prominent role in the American scientific effort directing a number of research projects and contributing to the development of the atomic bomb with his discovery of the most effective catalyst for producing heavy water. He was knighted by both the Queen and the Pope in the same month. A Chair in chemistry is named for him at Princeton. The inscription would seem to indicate that Taylor provided advice to Van Dine about the novel or at least to Willard Huntington Wright as Van Dine was a pseudonym. A Philo Vance novel filmed in 1935 with Paul Lukas as Vance starring opposite Rosalind Russell in one of her earliest roles. Charles Scribner's Sons hardcover
