1966rif. 075097Kansas City MO: The Defender Publishers August 1966. First Edition. Vintage Magazine. Very Good -. 11.75" x 8.5. Illustrated . The founder and original editor of this publication was Gerald B. Winrod an American fundamentalist evangelist author and controversial publisher involved in political activism during WWII. While opinions differ as to his character Winrod was accused of anti semitic and neo-Nazi views. He was indicted by the federal government for sedition in the Great Sedition trial of 1942-1944 which was later dismissed after a sudden heart attack and death of the presiding judge caused a subsequent mistrial. <br.Dr. G. H. Montgomery took over as President and Editor of The Defender in March 1963. He credited himself with revitalizing the publication which had seen a significant downward trend in the 1950s and bringing the magazine back from "struggling for survival". In a previous issue Montgomery noted that "Yet in spite of all these handicaps in less than three years after I became editor the circulation of Defender Magazine had jumped from 28000 to 130000 copies a month." The publication for this magazine was moved from Wichita Kansas to Kansas City Missouri. With the July issue of 1966 after 40 years of publication "Defender" discontinued all commercial advertising and transitioned to be completely editorial in content. The cover of this issue reads "Defenders for over 40 years has been an organization dedicated to the perpetuation of fundamental Christianity with Americanism." Gold black and white paper cover illustrated with a photograph Mr. James C. Willcoxon on the cover in black and white. Side stapled. Issues of "The Defender Magazine" during the G. H. Montgomery period would primarily be written by editorial staff with a few outside various writers. Illustrated with artwork in black and white with some colors added throughout. 16 pp. SOME ARTICLE TITLES IN THIS ISSUE ARE THE FOLLOWING: "Letters To The Editor" "God's Stock Market Never Goes Down!" by M. L. Flowers "The Shepherd Psalm In The Atomic Age" by Dr. G. H. Montgomery "Subversion In The Churches" by Mary Jane Harris "Wichita Days - Trials & Triumphs" "Defenders National Seminary Home Bible Study" by Dr. May H. Clutter President Defenders National Seminary "Redeeming The Time" by Dr. Walter L. Wilson "Only God Knows" by Dorothy M. Berry "Sweeping Change In Defender Policy" on the back cover. CONDITION: Leaves have moderately toned throughout with chipping along edges and a 1/2 inch continuous tear at the foredge. Address label for previous owner affixed to the back. A fascinating look into the mind of extreme political and religious views from the mid 20th century in America. A rare vintage issue in nice condition. Full refund if not satisfied.
