1827réf. 68286Charlestown Navy Yard January 1 1827. Court Martial for a Rude Sailor A brief letter from Commodore William Montgomery Crane to Secretary of the Navy Samuel Southard regarding charges brought against a midshipman by the name of Farnifold Green. The letter reads as follows: "Sir I forward herewith Charges & specifications of charges exhibited by Lieut. John White against midshipman Farnifold Green. I have furnished him with the charges & informed him that application would be made for his trial by Court Martial. He is now under suspension. I know nothing of this Officer personally. Lt. White represents his conduct as excessively outrageous & personally abusive. I forward a copy of his letter to me previous to the exhibition of charges not present." "Excessively outrageous" was an appropriate description for Green's actions in the navy. Despite being a noncommissioned officer the Southerner was a perpetual drunk both on and off duty who did little to hold back his invective for his superiors. In the Court Martial Lieutenant White recounted multiple incidents during which Green "repeated a great deal of abusive language; I could scarcely understand what he did say" and that he declared "My name is Green Farnifold Green of North Carolina and care for no Northern officer." He also "threw himself into an attitude for boxing" exclaiming to White "I'll crush you to hell by God!" He was also accused of dereliction of duty and faking illness to avoid work. Unsurprisingly insubordination and drunkenness were not deemed qualities befitting an officer: Green was found guilty of all charges ejected from the Navy. He then applied to John Quincy Adams a Northerner if there ever was one hoping to be reinstated but does not appear to have been successful. William M. Crane 1784-1846 began his naval career in 1799 aboard the U.S.S. United States. In 1807 he was present on the Chesapeake during its fateful encounter with H.M.S. Leopard. He commanded the schooner Nautilus during the War of 1812 where much like the crew of his former ship he was captured by H.M.S. Shannon. After his release he served under Chauncey on Lake Ontario until the end of the war. While serving as the first chief of the Bureau of Ordnance and Hydrography he was traumatized by the fatal explosion on board the frigate Princeton in 1844 and eventually committed suicide in his own office in 1846. "Despite an untimely demise…Crane's career personifies the professionalism of the nineteenth-century naval officer corps" – ANB. Old folds minor soiling. Near fine. ANB 5 pp.680-81. unknown books

1840réf. 2307812London: Ball Arnold & Co 1840. Small Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. New edition revised seventh edition and fourth edition respectively. Both volumes feature idyllic fore-edge paintings: the first of a woman and a boy holding hands as they walk a road with large trees on either side in the foreground and copses of trees in the distance; the second depicts two figures rowing a canoe down a stream with a village in the distance. Each appears to be by the same artist. Corners a bit rubbed with evidence of minor restoration to spine head and foot ink name on front endpaper of each volume. 1840 Small Hard Cover. xi 171; 208 12 pp. 12mo. Volumes one and two of what was ultimately a six-volume set of Montgomery's collected poems. The presence of fore-edge paintings on these volumes is somewhat unusual as traditionally this was done on leather-bound volumes often quite a bit larger than these and the practice in general was considerably more common in the 18th century and earlier. That being said these are ably done so it is clear that they are not the work of an amateur and it is possible someone commissioned a contemporary artist to do the entire set and these are the volumes that remain. His poetry while it sold well during his lifetime is remembered best as the victim of excoriating reviews by John Wilson in Blackwood's and Thomas Babington Macaulay in the Edinburgh Review. Ball, Arnold, & Co hardcover

1998réf. 1696London: Macmillan & Sons 1998. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF THE LANDMARK DISCOVERY OF RNA INTERFERENCE RNAi A FUNDAMENTAL MECHANISM OF GENE REGULATION. RNAi became both a major research tool and a new class of therapeutics. In terms of impact on biology medicine and biotechnology this paper is considered a foundational discovery not just an incremental advance. Fire and Mello won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine IN 2006 just eight years after publication unusually fast recognition for how transformative it was. Prior to Fire and Mello's paper researchers knew that injecting antisense RNA into C. elegans could sometimes silence genes but the effect was often weak inconsistent and poorly understood. Fire and Mello showed that the actual trigger was double-stranded RNA dsRNA not single-stranded antisense RNA as had been assumed. They found that dsRNA was far more potent than either sense or antisense strands alone effective at just a few molecules per cell that it could silence genes with striking specificity that the effect could spread between cells and even to offspring and that it worked catalytically rather than stoichiometrically - implying an amplification mechanism. The discovery that RNAi is a natural evolutionarily conserved gene-regulation and antiviral defense mechanism found across plants animals and fungi. The rapid development of RNAi as a laboratory tool for knocking down specific genes to study their function - now a standard technique in virtually every molecular biology lab.
