He is noted for serving in both World Wars acting as Chief of the General Staff in the Middle East and India and famously delivering the telegram that dismissed General Archibald Wavell from his command. During the Second World War he served as Chief of Staff in the Middle East. In a famous piece of history he was the officer who had to read Prime Minister Winston Churchill's telegram dismissing General Wavell while Wavell was shaving.
