1958réf. 3732451958. Single unlined 8-1/2 x 11 inch leaf holograph text in blue ink recto and verso; old fold lines with small tear and crease to one edge; in franked autograph envelope with light toning and wear. A punchy humorous letter to Sybil Landeau while she was still an undergraduate student at Hunter College the school Audre Lorde was also attending at the time. Her friend Eugenia begins by apologizing for her "bad French" stating that since she was "on the verge of leaving New Orleans I wanted to make it really abstruse and delay comprehension until I arrived in S.F. which would make me in two places at once" After offering to contact any friends of Landeau's in San Francisco she then writes "What are your present interests aside from Opera exams and Audre Lorde" While it is unknown exactly when the friendship between between Landeau - a passionate opera fan and future lawyer - and Lorde became intimate this letter provides perhaps the first indication that Landeau's feelings toward Lorde had begun to evolve into something far more personal. Their resulting affair continued into their graduate years at Columbia University and though it ended at some point during the 1960s both women carried on working together for civil and gay rights and their friendship endured until Lorde's untimely 1992 death. An important letter in the biography of Audre Lorde sent to one of her earliest girlfriends. unknown books

White & color illus. boards brown & illus. dust jacket 132 pp. BW & color illus.; weighs 3 lbs. Considers the life and work of British-born photographer Adam Fuss b. 1961. "Like an eighteenth-century experimenter Fuss utilizes organic and raw materials in an unusual approach revealing spiritual and emotional process. . This book the first major monograph of the artist's work is certain to be an important contribution to current discussions of photography's past and the question of its future." dj This self-titled book is about life death and various cultural and personal views of spirituality. Much like an autobiography in words and pictures the book catalogues Fuss's progression as he explores the world around him while questioning what it means to "exist." The book starts out with a biography of Fuss's life providing the viewer with an outline of his interests in the natural and spiritual worlds dating back to his childhood. As his ideas develop he confronts photography's "problem" -inextricable attachment to realistic representation- by challenging it with his desire to "capture and keep an object's mysterious self-inscription." The results are the 57 plates located in the last section of the book. Using organic and raw materials such as humans and animals flowers and plants water stained glass from churches and light alone Fuss inscribes their living energies onto the light sensitive paper by use of time and a stroboscopic flash. The universe conscious versus the unconscious chaos versus harmony representations of the soul's journey and the awareness of eternal return can all be seen throughout these photograms. From abstract expressionism and surrealism to pure documentation Fuss's unique methodology refers to past masters while revealing his spiritual and emotional process as a journey to discover the essence of natural forms. Adam Fuss has emerged as one of the bold and truly creative artists utilizing photography today. Fuss's photograms clearly break from those of his predecessors Man Ray Moholy-Nagy and Talbot and while striking a chord of homage the images redefine how and what we see in pictures viscerally and intellectually. Future utopia by this eccentric Ohio physician and philosopher whose mostly self-published works ranged from Lost Race fiction to straightforward medical treatises including The Epitome of Ambulent Proctology 1925 and Office Practice for the General Practician 1934. In the current work Blanchard writing in the voice of a woman librarian looking back from 22nd century America envisions a future world made perfect through collectivization land reform the emancipation of women and - sigh - as in so many technological utopias of the period Eugenics: ".Can you imagine a greater folly than asylums and prisons.making more and more criminals more unfits and misfits being born each year then burdening society with their care and support When Altruism gained power we blotted out those hopelessly unfit to live.we removed the cause of crime and purged the nation of its defective taint." Such "blotting out" was a common dream among a certain class of pre-war scientists and physicians turned into a horrifying reality by the Third Reich. An uncommon work especially so in the dust jacket which is rarely seen. HANNA 362. NEGLEY 116. SARGENT p.98. Medical Success Press unknown books
