1968réf. 73791Pasadena California: California Institute of Technology 1968. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Emil Herzog's set with his ink signature to the front flyleaf in the first volume. A pioneering work based on extensive research conducted at Caltech and Palomar Observatory. While the delineation of the clusters on the 48-inch Palomar Schmidt plates was Zwicky's work all the measurements of the tens of thousands of individual galaxies were Herzog's: photographing each field with the 18-inch Palomar Schmidt measuring coordinates and preparing finding charts. In addition he determined the apparent magnitudes of the brighter galaxies by schraffier guided plates and a flyspanker. For the fainter objects where the schraffier images were too washed out to be manageable he found that his nearsightedness made schraffier images unnecessary. His familiarity with the 48-inch Schmidt plates led him to be one of the first to be aware of the character of the large-scale distribution of galaxies. Later the Swiss-born Herzog 1917-98 taught astronomy at the University of Southern California and mathematics at Cal Poly Pomona serving as department chair from 1974 to 1980. Quarto six volumes. Original blue buckram bindings with gilt titles. Mild fading to the spines with a small spot to the front board of the first volume; otherwise a very good set. About the author: François Joseph Chabas 1817-1882 was a French Egyptologist who came from a modest background studied at Chalon and became a wine merchant. Self-taught Chabas learned Latin Greek and other languages. Interested in anthropology he turned to study Old Egyptian languages. Chabas was a member of several learned societies and later president of the Conseil departemental of Saône-et-Loire. Between 1876 and 1880 he edited the journal "L'Égyptologie." His works have contributed much to elucidate the history of the invasion and repulsion of the Hyksos in Egypt. Chabas was elected a foreign member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1865. From Wikipedia. J. Dejussieu; Maisonneuve et Cie hardcover

"The effect of the volume is less that of a written book than it is that of a man sitting near you at his ease and talking earnestly and with a curious sort of impersonal objective attitude about his life the principles of living and working upon which he has based his success his convictions about how the work of the world might be done with more efficiency and more happiness." - New York Times. FIRST EDITION of this novel which, way ahead of its time, discusses the right of women to enjoy sexual pleasure. A LARGE-PAPER COPY, ONE OF ONLY TEN PRINTED ON FINE HANDMADE DUTCH LAID PAPER (the rest of the edition was printed on cheap wood-pulp paper.) Also a fascinating association copy, from the library of MARCEL GOMPEL, a Jewish professor at the College de France who became a hero of the French resistance and was finally tortured and executed on orders from Klaus Barbie. When Barbie came to trial, the prosecutors used Gompel's case as a particularly clear and egregious example of his guilt of crimes against humanity. 8vo. Beautifully bound (surely for Gompel) in half morocco and marbled boards. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Original covers and spine preserved. Silk ribbon page marker. FINE AND BRIGHT, with no defects. A truly unique book.

LIMITED EDITION OF 1500 COPIES. UNNUMBERED SET.; The Topkapi Saray Museum collection of Chinese Ceramics is one of the largest and most important in the whole world yet comparatively little of it has ever been published. The wares assembled here present a continuous review of porcelains made for export from the 13th century to the 19th century which in its range of styles and designs is without equal in any other surviving collection. With some 4500 pieces dating from the Yuan and Ming dynasties and a further 5500 from the Qing the present three-volume work covering the entire collection constitutes the most extensively illustrated book on Chinese ceramics yet published and provides an unrivaled source for dating and the study of design. The main part of the work consists of a complete and definitive catalogue in which every piece is itemised. Each entry is accompanied by one or more monochrome illustrations scaled in size according to importance and many are also shown in colour. The work contains 5000 illustrations in all of which 200 are large-size colour plates. The volumes divide the catalogue into three major sections "Celadon Wares" "Yuan and Ming Porcelains" and "Qing Porcelains". These sections and their sub-divisions are arranged chronologically and are prefaced by extensive introductions by Regina Krahl and John Ayers. Virtually all the celadon wares are products of the famous Longquan kilns and the majority date from the 14th and 15th centuries; numbering in all some 1350 pieces they comprise the most extensive body of such material in existence. In blue-and-white and white wares of the 14th and early 15th centuries too which are widely regarded as the finest products of the Yuan and early Ming the group of 125 pieces has no rival in size or quality while the representation of later Ming export blue-and-white is rich in the extreme; the polychrome and monochrome classes of Ming ware also including some notable rarities. As for the Qing wares of all categories these two comprise a uniquely extensive range of designs still virtually unpublished and of great value to students of Chinese porcelain. The first volume is introduced by a series of essays surveying the background to the collection and various aspects of the ceramics themselves. Dr. Unsal Yucel and Dr. Julian Raby throw new light on how porcelains both entered and left the palace in what quantities and at what dates; Dr. Raby also contributes a penetrating examination of the nature of Ottoman taste in this field showing how porcelain was regarded at the Court and for what purposes and on what occasions it was used. Further important articles examine in detail the use of Chinese and Arabic marks on the porcelains. A full working bibliography a concordance and a thorough index complete the work.
