Gordon William Prange July 16 1910 – May 15 1980 was the author of several WWII historical manuscripts which were published by his co-workers after his death in 1980. Prange was a professor of history at the University of Maryland from 1937 to 1980 with a break of nine years 1942–1951 of military service in the United States Navy during World War II and in the postwar military occupation of Japan when he was the Chief Historian in General Douglas MacArthur's staff. During this time Prange collected material from and interviewed many Japanese military officers enlisted men and civilians with the information later being used in the writing of his books. Several became New York Times bestsellers including At Dawn We Slept The Untold Story of Pearl Harbor and Miracle at Midway. Prange's 1963 Tora! Tora! Tora! published first in Reader's Digest and later expanded into At Dawn We Slept. Derived from a Kirkus review: A massive history-- the late Professor Prange chief of military history in occupied Japan has looked into every aspect of the attack on Pearl Harbor--starting with the Japanese side of the story--and leaves no doubt that as his collaborators and posthumous editors write "Tokyo not Washington established Japan's foreign policy; the individual responsible for the attack was Isoruko Yamamoto not Franklin Delano Roosevelt." There is much new material--on such usually neglected matters too as: the Japanese war games used to refine the attack plan; the development of special bombs and torpedoes for use in the attack; Japanese intelligence operations in Hawaii--and American counterintelligence; the nature and function of the overlapping American commands in Hawaii. But Prange also presents the well-known material incisively: the historic March 1941 Bellinger-Martin report--a plan for joint Army/Navy action in the event of an attack on Oahu or fleet units in Hawaiian waters--is wrapped up with the observation that they ""could not have done a better job of mind reading had they actually looked over the shoulders of Yamamoto."" The controversy surrounding what happened thereafter or didn't happen engendered eight separate American postwar investigations--and it is in treating these that the book is most outstanding. Prange goes into the nature of each panel and evaluates its members procedures and conclusions; most he points out illustrate "hindsight at its hindmost." In an interesting appendix Goldstein and Dillon summarize Prange's criticisms of the revisionist Roosevelt-blaming histories of the attack. From first to last--responsible intelligent absorbing. DJ is worn torn soiled and heavily chipped/portions missing. History Of Military Aircraft Carriers And Their Use In Wartime. Most of the narrative addresses the Second World War. However there is also pertinent information and discussion on the Korean War war of national liberation Indochina/VIetnam and other situations such as the Suez Canal Crisis Of 1956 etc. Norman Polmar is a prominent author specializing in the naval aviation and intelligence areas. He has led major projects for the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Navy and foreign governments. His professional expertise has served three Secretaries of the U.S. Navy and two Chiefs of Naval Operations. He is credited with 50 published books including nine previous editions of Ships and Aircraft of the U.S. Fleet and four editions of Guide to the Soviet Navy. Polmar writes a column for Proceedings and was editor of the United States and several other sections of the annual publications of Jane's Fighting Ships. In 2019 the Naval Historical Foundation awarded Polmar the Commodore Dudley W. Knox Naval History Lifetime Achievement Award. A complete history of the aircraft carrier has long been needed tying together all the loose strings of aircraft operations at sea—the towed flying-off barges of World War I the antisubmarine hunter-killer groups of World War II the air support missions in the many post-1945 "limited wars" the attempts of continental navies "to fly" and the ship and aircraft types that evolved over these years of both war and "peace." Aircraft Carriers fulfills this need in the literature of 20th century naval history. So thorough is Mr. Polmar's research that the book is almost encyclopedic in its coverage though following a general and very useful chronological approach. The photographs and diagrams are excellent and complement the text extremely well. Between the large amount of data and the many illustrations Aircraft Carriers should become the standard reference work on the subject of the ships that have carried flying machines and the machines that have done the flying. The book is straight narrative history packed with technical details about the carriers and planes. If the reader has any doubt of this from reading the text he will find much of the data repeated in the captions to the photographs. For backup many of the ship statistics are again repeated in the appendices. The aviation enthusiast will find satisfaction in such facts as the relative rates of climb of the F4F-3 Wildcat and the F2A-2 Buffalo. It is this detail though that makes the book an indispensable reference work. Polmar pulls together all existing information about carrier aviation after 1945 the first writer to have done this in a thorough manner performing a service for which all future naval historians of this period will be indebted to him. And thus we have the chief merit of this masterwork: the first 60 years of carrier aviation history are finally between two book covers. Aircraft Carriers is then a thoroughly-researched meticulous exhaustive and encyclopedic work crammed with useful information statistics and photographs. It is a big book about a very big subject. Its overall message might be summed up by non-aviator "Thirty-One Knot" Burke's alleged remark after watching Task Force 58 pound the Hollandia beaches in April 1944: "The airplane is here to stay!" To which Norman Polmar has added "so long as the carrier is there to provide it with a deck!". Doubleday hardcover

Ferdynand Antoni Ossendowski 27 May 1876 - 3 January 1945 was a Polish writer explorer university professor and anti-Communist political activist. He is best known for his books about Lenin and the Russian Civil War in which he participated. After the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War 1904-1905 Ossendowski moved to Harbin in Manchuria where he founded a Central Technical Research Laboratory a Russian-financed institution for development of the ore deposits in the area. At the same time he headed the local branch of the Russian Geographic Society in Vladivostok. As such he made numerous trips to Korea Sakhalin Ussuri and the shores of the Bering Strait. In Manchuria he also became one of the leaders of the considerable Polish diaspora. At the outbreak of the Russian Civil War he also got involved in the counterrevolutionary Russian government led by Supreme Governor Admiral Aleksandr Kolchak. He served at various posts among others as an intelligence officer an envoy to the intervention corps from the United States and an assistant to the Polish 5th Rifle Division of Maj. Walerian Czuma. In 1918 he was responsible for the transfer of many tsarist and White Russian documents to the Entente. In late 1921 he published his first book in English: Beasts Men and Gods. The description of his travels during the Russian Civil War became a striking success and a bestseller. After the end of the Russian Civil War Ossendowski continued to travel to different parts of the world and after each journey he published a book or two. In the interwar period he was considered the creator of a distinct genre called the traveling novel. With over 70 books published in Poland and translated almost 150 times into 20 other languages Ossendowski was also the second most popular Polish author abroad after Henryk Sienkiewicz. Venezia was subjected to the typical procedure of the deported to Auschwitz: shave shower the tattooing of the number on the left forearm wearing the interned uniform. At the end of the procedure Venezia was locked up in a separate and isolated section of the camp in quarantine. After quarantine Venezia was assigned to the Sonderkommando in Birkenau made mainly prisoners in good physical condition because of the physical effort that the job required. Venezia was part of the Sonderkommando for six months. A unique participant's account of everyday death and life inside the engine of the Nazi extermination machine. Although most Sonderkommando members too were systematically killed by the SS fate allowed Shlomo Venezia to survive and bear witness. This is a unique eye-witness account of everyday life right at the heart of the Nazi extermination machine. When the Germans invaded the Venezias were deported to Auschwitz. Given the chance to earn a little extra bread he agreed to become a 'Sonderkommando' without realizing what this entailed. He soon found himself a member of the 'special unit' responsible for removing the corpses from the gas chambers and burning their bodies. Dispassionately he details the grim round of daily tasks evokes the terror inspired by the man in charge of the crematoria 'Angel of Death' Otto Moll and recounts the attempts made by some of the prisoners to escape including the revolt of October 1944. Colonel Hayashi served on the Imperial Japanese Army General Staff. He graduated from the Japanese Military Academy and their War College. He served in Europe as a Military Attaché prior to WWII. He had several assignments during WWII in Tokyo and at the end of the war was Secretary and Aide to the Minister of War. Dr. Coox was a noted academic and military writer and analyst. In collaborating with Colonel Hayashi on the English-language edition of KOGUN Dr. Coox undertook extensive research which resulted in the inclusion of much more detailed information than was in the original Japanese edition. Volumes have been written about the U. S. Forces and the Pacific War but to date little has been published concerning the Japanese side from the standpoint of high-level command plans and policies. Kogun fills the gap of this long-felt need. Quite original it presents facts and figures never before published in the U. S. This work goes far beyond recounting battles and campaigns. It commences with a sound analysis of the Meiji era background and moves on with authority to treat significant trends and causes as well as results of pre-war Japanese militarism. The author addresses how the army high command estimated the situation throughout the Pacific War on what thinking were its plans of operations founded and how did it actually conduct matters. The narrative reveals episodes of high command errors misestimation of the situation mismanagement in the conduct of operations and internal disagreement on basic policy. Frederick Ira Ordway III April 4 1927 - July 1 2014 was an American space scientist and author of visionary books on spaceflight. Ordway was educated at Harvard University and completed several years of graduate study at the University of Paris. He owned a large collection of paintings depicting astronautical themes. Ordway was a member of the faculty at The University of Alabama in Huntsville UAH from 1970 to 1973 and he was awarded an honorary doctorate by UAH in 1992. Spaceflight also written space flight is ballistic flight into or through outer space. Spaceflight can occur with spacecraft with or without humans on board. Examples of human spaceflight include the U.S. Apollo Moon landing and Space Shuttle programs and the Russian Soyuz program as well as the ongoing International Space Station. Examples of unmanned spaceflight include space probes that leave Earth orbit as well as satellites in orbit around Earth such as communications satellites. These operate either by telerobotic control or are fully autonomous. Spaceflight is used in space exploration and also in commercial activities like space tourism and satellite telecommunications. Additional non-commercial uses of spaceflight include space observatories reconnaissance satellites and other Earth observation satellites. A spaceflight typically begins with a rocket launch which provides the initial thrust to overcome the force of gravity and propels the spacecraft from the surface of the Earth. Once in space the motion of a spacecraft—both when unpropelled and when under propulsion—is covered by the area of study called astrodynamics. Some spacecraft remain in space indefinitely some disintegrate during atmospheric reentry and others reach a planetary or lunar surface for landing or impact. McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc hardcover
