This work springs from the high regard fashion photographer Irving Penn has for has for the Japanese designer Issey Miyake who has said that Penn's photographs allow him to see his own designs. Issey Miyake 1938 2022 was a Japanese fashion designer. He was known for his technology-driven clothing designs exhibitions and fragrances such as L'eau d'Issey which became his best-known product. In 1969 Miyake moved from Japan to New York City where he met Christo Robert Rauschenberg Joe Eula and Donna Jordan. He was enrolled in English classes at Columbia University and worked on Seventh Avenue for designer Geoffrey Beene. Returning to Tokyo in 1970 he founded the Miyake Design Studio a high-end producer of women's fashion. From a young age Miyake had respected artist Isamu Noguchi whose novelty and sense of fun in his designs inspired Miyake. He was also inspired by fashion designer Madeleine Vionnet's use of geometric calculations and "a single piece of beautiful cloth". In Paris he visited several museums and he mentioned that he was influenced by sculptors such as Constantin Brâncusi And Alberto Giacometti. In the late 1980s Miyake began to experiment with new methods of pleating that would allow both flexibility of movement for the wearer as well as ease of care and production. The garments are cut and sewn first then sandwiched between layers of paper and fed into a heat press where they are pleated. The fabric's 'memory' holds the pleats and when the garments are liberated from their paper cocoon they are ready-to wear. For his part Irving Penn 1917 2009 was an American photographer known for his fashion photography portraits and still lifes. Penn's career included work at Vogue magazine and independent advertising work for clients including Issey Miyake and Clinique. His work has been exhibited internationally and continues to inform the art of photography. During his early years at Vogue as the magazine's art director Penn developed a bold graphic sensibility that complemented his chic images and embodied modern taste. His use of monochromatic backdrops of black white or gray allowed him complete control of natural lighting conditions and enhanced the visual simplicity of his photographs. In an era when elaborate artificial lighting was the norm his work stood out from the rest and influenced subsequent fashion photography. Expanding his austere studio surroundings Penn constructed a set of upright angled backdrops to form a stark acute corner. Subjects photographed with this technique included John Hersey Martha Graham Marcel Duchamp Pablo Picasso Georgia O'Keeffe W. H. Auden and Igor Stravinsky. 'Irving Penn Regards the Work of Issey Miyake' displays the wordless harmony of the artistic relationship between Irving Penn one of the great photographers of the twentieth century and the designer Issey Miyake one of the few figures to have taken clothing design into the realm of art. For more than a decade and across different continents the work of one has provided a mirror for the work of the other. Miyake offers Penn the forms and textures that have been the substance of much of his long career. Penn's photographs allow Miyake to look again at his designs as if they were completely new. This is an invaluable representation of the intuitive partnership between two artists that Miyake describes as a "silent understanding." ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 184 pages . Jonathan Cape hardcover
