réf. 5944London United Kingdom: E. Moxon Son and Company. hardcover. Good. Thomas Hood. Publication: London E. Moxon Son and Company n.d. c. 1878 Formatting: 8vo 2 vols. pp. viii 568; xii 564. Condition Report: Good. The volumes present handsomely on the shelf but show moderate external wear typical of nineteenth-century half-leather bindings. The dark green leather spines are somewhat dried with surface scuffing and rubbing to the raised bands spine ends and corners though the intricate gilt tooling and lettering remain pleasantly bright. The pebble-grained cloth boards display general handling marks and shelf-wear notably including a faded patch of discolouration to the front board of Volume I. The hinges remain sound and the bindings are tightly secured. The combed marbled edges are somewhat muted by age matching the original endpapers. Internally the pages are generally clean with scattered instances of light foxing primarily affecting the preliminary and final leaves which is to be expected for the paper stock of this era. Catalogue Note: This two-volume collection of Thomas Hood's comedic writings represents a 'New Edition' issued during the publisher's tenure at Dorset Buildings in the late 1870s. Originally published in parts and later collected into 'First' and 'Second' series the work showcases the author's trademark wit puns and humorous essays augmented by a preface by his son in the second volume. The text is delightfully illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Hood complete with a facsimile signature and numerous comic wood-engraved vignettes interspersed throughout the prose. The set is attractively bound in nineteenth-century half dark green leather over matching pebble-grain cloth boards finished with combed marbled endpapers. While individual volumes or cloth-bound sets are fairly common on the open market complete sets retaining their decorative half-leather bindings are more uncommonly encountered in functional unsplit condition. A classic compendium of nineteenth-century British humour Hood's Own: Or Laughter from Year to Year gathers the best of Thomas Hood's comedic essays whimsical poetry and sharp social satire. Brimming with his signature puns and accompanied by his own charmingly eccentric illustrations this collection offers a delightful window into Victorian literary amusement and the enduring comic genius of one of the era's most beloved humorists.
