Bright crisp clean sharp-cornered - no bruised tips - original flecked/speckled grey cloth boards with the Order's bright crisp blocked silvergilt star - composed of chipped silver rays of eight points in the centre of which is a gold/gilt medallion bearing the crowned heads of King George V and Queen Mary within a circle inscribed with the moto FOR GOD AND THE EMPIRE. - to front board spine with brightcrisp blocked gilt lettered title only rear board undecorated and without text. Negligible shelf-wear to edges and corners - no nicks tears or splits present - spine ends with infinitesimal crease. Top edges lightly dust-soiled but no foxing/spotting fore-edgesslightly brighter and also with foxing; contents text bloxk bright glossy paper crisp and clean; tight solid and sound - pristine - no blemishes and no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners appears unread other than my collation; immaculate pale grey endpapers with blackgrey sketch of front elevation of St Paul's to recto and verso of front and rear respective free endpapers hinges intact solid and sound without any tears splits or carcking. UKslim Qrto HB illustrated1st ednvii-xiiipp1-64pp paginated includes a Contents list/table with blank verso a Foreword by HRH Prince Philip Grand Master and his facsimile signature double-page frntis colour illustration of completed new crypt sections on The Officers of the Order the history of the Order the insignia the history of the Chapel the Crypt of Saint Paul's and the Chapel accompanied with b/wcolour illustrations and reproductions and colourb/w photographs throughout the text and the book; plus unpaginated 2pp glossy blankshalf-title with blank verso title page with copyright to reverse author/Editor Sub-Dean Acknowledgements also with blank reverse and to the rear b/w photograph of East End's crypt window with printing information to its verso and 2pp glossy blanks. An uncommon item particularly as a 1st edn and more so in this condition and state of preservation. Visually the external appearance is exceptional especially and particularly internally is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of it's 55 year-old age. It really is an exceptional exemplary example for it's brightness cleanliness and lack of any excessive or other age-acquired detracting faults commonly encountered in a book of a comparable age. The book details the history with a detailed record of the design and significance of the Chapel of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. It covers the chapel's establishment in St Paul's Cathedral's crypt including its architecture and insignia.The chapel was established in 1957 in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral in London. The Order was established by King George V in 1917 to honour those who had served in a non-combative role and expanded the Order to reward contributions to the Arts Sciences Charitable work and Public Service. The Order comprises five classes across both military and civilian divisions. The Order also includes the British Empire Medal presented to those who have contributed to service in their community. The authoritative guide to the spiritual home of the Order of the British Empire and public service and as such is regarded as a valuable resource on the visual history and symbolism of the Order.
