Edited by J W Powell. List of Publications of the Bureau of American Ethnology pgs 5-6 From the library of David H Snow. First edition. Although classified by most conventional texts John Wesley Powell always maintained that he was not an adventure or an explorer. He considered himself a scientist motivated by a desire for knowledge and to further the progress of human kind. However Powell did live a busy and active life as a military leader the first navigator of the Colorado River and director of the United States Geological Survey. His accounts from navigating the Colorado River earned him early fame. Due to his compassion toward Native Americans he was elevated to director of the Smithsonian Institution's Bureau of Ethnology in which he continued until his death. His work on the Irrigation Survey for the western United States although never fully realized lead to the establishment of river gauging stations and preliminary work toward storage and utilization of river water for irrigation and prevention of floods and overflows. In 1979 the highway salvage program of the Laboratory of Anthropology expanded beyond highway salvage projects. Under the direction of David H. Snow it was reorganized as the Research Section of the Laboratory of Anthropology. The change guaranteed that the program had a dynamic role in the active profession of archaeology that it continued to add to the Lab's research collections and that publications on projects continued to be produced. By 1984 the Research Section staff had outgrown its location in the Laboratory of Anthropology. Along with the Laboratory's archaeological research collection of almost ten million artifacts the Research Section moved to new offices in downtown Santa Fe. Brown cloth brown dust jacket 305 pp. "The philosophical theory of scientific explanation proposed here involves a radically new treatment of causality that accords with the pervasively statistical character of contemporary science. Wesley C. Salmon describes three fundational conceptions of scientific explanation -- the epistemic modal and ontic. He argues that the prevailing view a version of the epistemic conception is untenable and that the modal conception is scientifically outdated. Significantly revising aspects of his earlier work he defends a causal / mechanical theory that is a version of the ontic conception." dj. Princeton University Press hardcover

Pamphlet contains basic biographical background on Wells and his criminal history as well as details on his plainly unjust death sentence. Montgomery in the Good War is a richly textured account of a southern city and its people during World War II.Using newspaper accounts interviews letters journals and his own memory of the time Wesley Newton reconstructs wartime-era Montgomery Alabama--a sleepy southern capital that was transformed irreversibly during World War II. The war affected every segment of Montgomery society: black and white rich and poor male and female those who fought in Europe and the Pacific and those who stayed on the home front. Newton follows Montgomerians chronologically through the war from Pearl Harbor to Hiroshima as they experience patriotism draft and enlistment rationing scarcity drives and the deaths of loved ones. His use of small vignettes based on personal recollections adds drama and poignancy to the story. Montgomery in the Good War is an important reminder that wars are waged at home as well as abroad and that their impact reverberates well beyond those who fight on the front lines. Those who came of age during the war will recognize themselves in this moving volume. It will also be enlightening to those who have lived in times of relative peace.
