ref. 391704Unbound. Very Good. Four page letter dated July 7 1868 from "On the Cars between Clinton Iowa & Omaha Neb." with original envelope postmark "Aug. 26 Nevada C.T." Old folds some smudging but nice and very good. Easily readable although occasionally a little shaky: "I can not write so you can read it while the cars are going but Mother can." To his 10-year-old son Horace written by Dr. Wing during John Wesley Powell's second expedition to explore Colorado and the West. Wing is mentioned in Wallace Stegner's Beyond the Hundredth Meridian. The letter to his son describes the plains of Nebraska with fairly detailed descriptions of fields plants birds and towns. He mentions that Powell has left ahead of him and referring to the telegraph: "When I got to Chicago Prof. Powell was gone hundreds of miles. What could I do Why I could send lightning a telegram to tell him to wait for me and I did. I sent to Denver you must look for it on the map and the lightning said he was not there. Then I sent to Cheyenne called Shyan and he was there & he told the lightning to tell me how to get passes on the R.R. and to come on." He then suggests that his young son make his own telegraph and give some instructions on how to begin. Accompanied by a nice gravure portrait of Horace Wing Jr. taken by the photographer Pratz of Los Angeles and also with some later newspapers with biographical information on Wing who became a prominent owner of orange groves around Los Angeles. A nice letter connected to an important exploration. unknown books

This book restores much of the human drama and detail. Moving from village to village the Joseph Smith Sr. family lived in constant poverty. When in 1825 Joseph Sr. a cooper defaulted on the family's final mortgage payment he and his nineteen-year-old son Joseph Jr. traveled one hundred miles south to Pennsylvania to join a band of money diggers on a desperate hunt for buried Spanish treasure. Following this ill-fated quest father and son returned near-penniless to New York to face eviction. They resettled in a small Manchester cabin where young Joseph later saw angels-not unlike his father and other contemporaries-and eventually found hieroglyph-inscribed sheets of gold which his former money-digging associates repeatedly tried to steal. During this turbulent time Joseph Smith was brought to court three times for crystal gazing eloped with a former landlord's daughter watched as his mother and siblings were excommunicated from the Presbyterian church published his translation of the hieroglyphs founded the Church of Christ saw a potential convert forcibly abducted by her minister and eventually sought refuge in Ohio where he changed the name of his church and its place of origin. Powell's 1869 exploration was the first documented expedition to successfully navigate the perilous rapids of the Colorado River through the uncharted Grand Canyon. The expedition set off in 1869 with ten men and four boats under the direction of one-armed American explorer and Civil War veteran John Wesley Powell 1834-1902. After three months and nearly 1000 miles only five of the original party emerged from the depths of the canyon. Their historic journey mapped the last wild untamed river of the American West and named the last unknown regions of American geography. The Henry Mountains and the Dirty Devil River were until the Powell expedition the last nameless mountain range and river in the continental U.S. Carl Wheat writes in "Mapping the Transmississippi West 1850-1861" "As a narrative of adventure this book of 1875 is one of the most justly celebrated documents in the literature of exploration." In recognition of Powell's contributions to American exploration geology and ethnology he was appointed the first director of the U.S. Bureau of Ethnology of the Smithsonian Institution. He also served as director of the U.S. Geological Survey from 1881 to 1894. Powell Plateau a butte in Grand Canyon National Park is named after him as is Lake Powell. Howes P525. Farquhar 42a.
