In this specific tract Wesley strictly outlines his views on personal attire urging his followers to avoid costly apparel ornaments and worldly fashion in favor of strict modesty humility and plainness of dress. Contemporary commentators often note that Wesley tied dress directly to inward spiritual simplicity. He specifically exhorted Methodists to 'wear no gold. no pearls or precious stones' and to avoid 'velvets. silks. and fine linen'. Wesley explicitly advised women against wearing rings necklaces lace and ruffles while warning men against colored waistcoats and glittering buckles. As noted by historians of 18th - century fashion and religion Wesley's teachings on dress - alongside similar Quaker customs - were a direct pushback against the era's rising consumerism emphasizing that dressing for the approval of others was as spiritually dangerous as praying or giving alms for public show.
