ref. FRE90128 pp. 23.6 × 15.5 cm. Original cloth binding gilt lettering to front cover partly faded. Marbled endpapers. Very good condition. Rare. First edition. One of 200 copies. Text in Yiddish. A poetical account of California by Mattes Luniansky Mattes Lune 1896–1929 born in Białystok then in the Russian Empire who immigrated to the United States in 1913. After working in a Chicago cigar factory he contracted tuberculosis and entered the Jewish Consumptives’ Relief Society sanatorium in Denver subsequently becoming its librarian. In the 1920s he settled in City Terrace near Boyle Heights then the center of Yiddish life in Los Angeles. The collection includes “Beverly Hills” “Ganahl Street” “California Poppies” and “Palm Springs Canyon.” His California poems juxtapose luxuriant scenery with urban isolation: the gardens of Beverly Hills conceal joyless streets while a singer on Ganahl Street performs to empty balconies. His experience of tuberculosis also informs the tension between the freedom of the Western landscape and the physical constraints of illness. These aspects of his work are examined by Sunny Yudkoff in Recovering Yiddish Culture in Los Angeles. WorldCat locates copies at the National Yiddish Book Center Jewish Theological Seminary of America New York Public Library YIVO Institute Wayne State University Library Concordia Theological Seminary Library and Hebrew Union College. hardcover

Previous owner's initials on free front endpaper also another owner's name at top of title page. Very faint trace of smell of an old book. Overall a tight clean very good copy. From the Introduction: "As an instinctively religious being man is constitutionally concerned in the sublime science which more perhaps than any other department of physics has enabled him to look "through nature up to nature's God." If "an undevout astronomer is mad" the converse is at least measurably true: unastronomic piety is mad. For if science without devotion be defective because the spiritual is the necessary inspiration of the material devotion without science is also defective because the material is the necessary embodiment of the spiritual. Science without religion is a corpse; religion without science is a ghost." Swan Sonnenschein, Lowrey & Co hardcover
