1929Best.-Nr. 30431Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company. Very Good. c.1929. First Edition. Hardcover. lacking the original dust jacket but encased in a professionally-made facsimile reproduction of same; see 2nd image posted with this listing modest shelfwear age-toning to edges of text block one-time owner's name printed neatly on front endpaper; contemporary newspaper clipping about the author's death laid in at the rear of the book SIGNED on the tipped-in limitation page by the author this being copy no. 271 of the limited/numbered edition. The author's first and only novel a tale set in Scotland Moon's birthplace about the travails of a girl born under the cloud of uncertain patrimony was the source for the hit 1930 film MIN AND BILL although the focus of the movie was shifted to the protagonist's grandmother played by Marie Dressler. The adaptation was co-written by one of M-G-M's top screenwriters Frances Marion who was a close friend of Moon's and to whom the novel is dedicated. Moon herself did some screenwriting in the 1920s at Famous Players-Lasky and M-G-M although the description of her on her Wikipedia page as "one of the earliest and most successful female screenwriters" seems a bit of an embellishment. The book was a critical sucess and a best-seller but Moon unfortunately didn't live to also experience the success of the movie: she died of tuberculosis in May 1930 about six months before its release. Many years later it was revealed to Richard de Mille the son of William C. de Mille director Cecil's older brother that Moon was his birth mother the product of her affair with his father; he subsequently wrote a book about it entitled "My Secret Mother Lorna Moon." NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing. 1949Best.-Nr. 188141949. Moon Bucklin. The Darker Brother 1949 brought Moon's 1943 novel of a Black Florida family's migration to Harlem into the postwar mass-market paperback trade centering the racial discrimination Ben encounters after moving North. The novel follows Ben from Florida to Harlem where expectations of greater freedom confront housing employment and interpersonal racism; his later military service returns him to the segregated South. Published originally during World War II the narrative placed these experiences within the movement of African Americans from the South to northern cities and the persistence of racial discrimination beyond the Jim Crow South. Moon Bucklin. The Darker Brother. New York City: Bantam Books November 1949. Bantam edition. First paperback printing. 246 pp. Original pictorial wrappers. 8vo. No dust jacket as issued. The front wrapper depicts Ben and his fiancée Birdie on a Harlem street confronted by a white man clutching papers with buildings and street activity visible behind them. Red blue and gold dominate the illustration. Across the upper margin appears the publisher's line "He came up North for freedom and got---Harlem!" The rear wrapper announces "Born the Wrong Color" in red lettering and summarizes Ben's experiences of racial prejudice. The cover's language and confrontation scene recast Moon's novel for the postwar paperback market by emphasizing racial conflict as its principal selling point. First published by Doubleday Doran in 1943 The Darker Brother follows Ben his mother and sister from Florida to Harlem and traces the consequences of racial violence and discrimination as Ben searches for work plans a future with Birdie and enters military service. Contemporary reviews recognized race relations as the novel's central subject while Moon continued addressing racial discrimination in A Primer for White Folks 1945 and The High Cost of Prejudice 1947. The 1949 Bantam edition is particularly revealing for the history of African American representation in popular publishing: its wrapper converts a novel about Black migration and racism into the visual and promotional vocabulary of the mid-century paperback juxtaposing the promise of northern freedom with the publisher's stark Harlem street scene. Minor creasing to the lower right corner of the front wrapper and minor chipping to the spine neither affecting text or illustration; internally clean and overall very good condition. unknown books
1971Best.-Nr. 167739Beverly Hills CA: United Artists 1971. Vintage reference photograph from the 1971 "surrealist documentary" rock film showing Frank Zappa. In 1970 Zappa completely re-formed the Mothers of Invention to include drummer Aynsley Dunber jazz keyboardist George Duke and three members of The Turtles. Zappa began to write a film for the new lineup and recorded "Chunga's Revenge" 1970 with them as a "preview." Subsequently Zappa met conductor Zubin Mehta and worked with him to produce a concert in May 1970 wherein the Los Angeles Philharmonic was augmented by the Mothers or vice versa as you like and referred to this as "the second preview." The film itself shot in a week at Pinewood Studios outside London was a tripped-out documentary about life as a musician on the road and Zappa characteristically chose an eclectic group of celebrities to join the proceedings including Theodore Bikel Ringo Starr and Keith Moon. The resulting soundtrack is a matter of debate among Zappa enthusiasts but is notable for its orchestral finale "Strictly Genteel" a touchstone for the variety of classical music experimentations Zappa would subsequently pursue. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine. United Artists unknown books
