1940ref. 19776np Elsinore CA nd ca. 1940s. Very good. Two volumes. The first mounted awkwardly into a zippered limp leather case and titled "Aheliobas" by hand to front cover. 6" x 4.5" approx. The second a small notebook leather over boards with "Aheliobas" scratched into leather at rear cover. Both volumes worn and a little ad hoc but generally very good overall. An unusual and intriguing pair of books owned by Dr. Aheliobas A. Johnson 1886-1955. Johnson whose business card laid into one volume describes him as a "Metaphysician Healer Teacher and Spiritual Counselor" was a resident of Lake Elsinore and Pasadena CA and devotee of the "I Am" movement founded by Theosophist Joseph Sieber Benner. Also known as the "Knowledge and Teachings of the Impersonal Life" "I Am" was an eccentric branch of theosophy that taught Christ proclaiming "I Am" indicated "the true spirit that resides in every human being." The first book included is a copy of "I Am"'s key text Benner's THE IMPERSONAL LIFE 14th edition 1944 heavily annotated by Johnson. Underlining marginalia and other annotations abound with endpapers also filled "This is my life's philosophy and principle as follower: 'I will see beauty and goodness in all things. From all that is unlovely shall my vision be immune.'". These annotations are then further complimented by a series of striking and almost hieroglyphic cryptograms whose key is contained in the accompanying small notebook. This second leather-bound volume is divided into alphabetical tabs and comprises a directory or legend to these symbols which range from the esoteric and alchemical to the more ordinary and practical. Several additional cryptograms are contained in this second volume as well. Taken together a strange but revealing look into California's experimentation with alternative movements and the formation or cult and counter-cult communities as well as peculiar work of outsider cryptography. Benner's work would go on to be taken up by the likes Guy Ballard and even Elvis Presley who during the last 13 years of his life gave out hundreds of copies of THE IMPERSONAL LIFE and allegedly had a copy with him the night he died. hardcover books
1886ref. 147868Rochester New York: Occult Word Press 1886. First and only edition of this theosophical short story. The Occult Word ran between 1884 and 1889 "for the dissemination of oriental knowledge and the new light from India". The journal was edited by Josephine Cables Aldrich 1843-1917 who founded the Rochester Brotherhood and the first US branch of the Theosophical Society and was the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor's eastern US representative. A friend of Susan B. Anthony she also co-founded the Woman's National University and School of Useful and Ornamental Arts. Although the pamphlet is undated it was advertised in volume seven of The Theosophist in 1886. "Written for The Occult Word" it likely first appeared in the journal but there are no extant copies from the year of its probable publication. WorldCat records only two copies of the pamphlet: Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library and the University of Alabama. Small octavo pp. 14. Original printed wrappers sewn at fold. Creased and lightly soiled front wrapper foxed: in very good condition. Gomes 1794. unknown
1939ref. 184453London: Theosophical Research Centre 1939. Guiding materialist physicians to "a deeper understanding of their patients" First edition of this textbook on spiritual medicine in the bright original cloth. In common with many spiritual developments originating in late 19th-century America theosophy contends that there is a deeper spiritual reality than that accessible through science and that direct contact with this reality can be established through transcendental practices. Some unrecognized factors in medicine applies these concerns to medical practice contending that it can lead the materialist physician "to a deeper understanding of their patients and explain much that is ignored or discounted when man is looked upon as a physical body only" p. 10. A small slip pasted onto the title page notes that this particular copy was "sold by The Theosophical Press Wheaton Illinois" the headquarters of the Theosophical Society in America. Octavo. Anatomical plate printed in red and black tables in the text. Original green cloth spine lettered in gilt. Light bumping and rubbing minor foxing to upper edge contents crisp: a very good copy indeed. hardcover
1910ref. 512014The Dharma Press 1910. First Edition. Paperback. VERY GOOD. 4 5-55 1 pp. 5x6.5' Sewn binding in brown natural paper French-flap wraps with printed title label to front cover. '2101' inscribed to front cover and beneath author's name on the title page; wrapper spine perished 1' from tail a bit worn around the edges but still mainly intact--remarkable given its fragility. Text clean and sound. Leonard Bosman was a Jewish fellow of the Theosophical Society of London and a prominent writer on the Kaballah and other esoteric fields. Following his teacher Elias Gewurtz Bosman was a prominent voice contending for the Kaballistic roots of Theosophy and the essential compatibility of the two traditions. Mysteries of the Qabalah was the first of six 'Esoteric Studies' in a series projected by the publisher of which only four were published. It was revised and reissued in 1915 and either of these Dharma Press editions are quite scarce this first edition showing only 8 holdings in OCLC. The Dharma Press paperback
1912ref. 10203London: The Theosophical Publishing Society 1912. First edition in English. 8vo 135 1pp. Folding chart at front translation by D.H.S. Nicholson introduction by A.E. Waite. Publisher's maroon cloth lettered in gilt and decorated in blind. Few stains to boards neat ownership signature to ffep. Very good. Scarce English translation of this text by the Russian mystic and Freemason Ivan Lopukhin 1756-1816 originally published in 1798. Lopukhin's work sets out his conception of the invisible spiritual church that exists beyond outward religion. Self-denial purification surrender of will spiritual rebirth divine union etc. are all discussed as paths to this "interior Church." Waite's introduction draws connections between the mysticism of Lopukhin and Karl von Eckartshausen Kabbalah and other hermetic traditions. The Theosophical Publishing Society unknown

A tremendous working set of Mabel Collins' foundational theosophy text Light on the Path with the rare second edition containing additional chapters "Comments on Light on the Path" and "How Best to Become a Theosophist." Collins 1851-1927 joined the Theosophical Society in the 1880s and co-edited Lucifer magazine with Blavatsky. She penned Light on the Path in 1885 the text providing insight into some of the basic concepts and beliefs of the society. Though she claimed to have written the work herself other prominent theosophists such as C.W. Leadbeater alleged the text was communicated through her mediumship by the Ascended Masters. Collins left the society a short time later in 1889 and became outspoken against Blavatsky and Theosophy. OCLC cites perhaps 10 separate holdings for the 1886 edition and 6 for the 1887.
