Publisher's black cloth stamped in blind gilt and red with striking symbolic illustration on front cover and lettered on spine. Corners and spine ends lightly bumped some rubbing along joints. Clean internally and nearly fine. A scarce and wacky book of evangelical apologetics from the turn of the century which seeks to prove the physical survival of the soul after death drawing from current psychical research. Marschner discusses hypnotism clairvoyance telepathy somnambulism apparitions spirit photography seances materialization psychic healing possession astral biological bodies and other topics using them as proof of his theory. This proof he argues should lead any skeptic onward to Christian salvation. OCLC cites 6 physical holdings. The Abbey Press unknown
1932ref. 8437London: Rider & Co 1932. First edition. 8vo 286pp. Spirit photograph of Lascelles as frontis and one other plate in the book. Publisher's pink cloth spine lettered in gilt. Slightly cocked corners bumped owner's inscriptions to pastedowns else a near fine copy. Uncommon spiritualist work from the Rev. Charles A. Simpson being essays channeled through his spirit guide "Dr. Lascelles." Simpson established The Seekers Healing Center and later in 1933 "discovered the 276 acres Addington Park and transformed it into a city of prayer" under the instruction of Lascelles. The Seekers Trust are still active today. OCLC cites perhaps 7 physical holdings of the first edition. Rider & Co unknown
1926ref. 8533Rochester NY: Will J. Erwood 1926. First editions. 9 volumes 8x5" continuously paginated continuing from volume 8 pp 438-784. Few vignette illustrations and decorations in the text. All staple bound in publisher's light green card wrappers with green-stamped illustration and lettering on all but December which has red. Staples with rust yapped edges worn and stained few with light damp staining mainly to fore and bottom edges and with corresponding rippling. A very good set. The first 9 issues of 12 from the "9th" volume of this quite uncommon spiritualist periodical from lifelong occultist and medium Dr. Will J. Erwood 1874-1948. The Radiant Life sought to develop "mind power" through instruction given by Erwood's channeling of "an intelligence" and "the Teacher" which he mediated at regular Psychic Classes. Erwood was a minister of the National Spiritualist Association active in the General Association of Spiritualists of New York and published other magazines such as The Mystic Key and Super-Psychology. He sold his "Radio Centric Power" lessons such as these along with those on Clairvoyance "Clairoaudience" "Clairsentience" and other undeveloped powers. A very scarce periodical which seemingly ran for only 3 volumes 8 9 and 10 from 1925-1927. OCLC cites 2 holdings for any issues at the University of Illinois and the Wisconsin Historical Society Library. . Will J. Erwood unknown
1884ref. 7822Bangor ME: O.F. Knowles & Co. Printers 1884. First edition. 8vo 168pp. Bound in publisher's rust cloth boards with black ruling and gilt lettering on spine beveled edges. Inscribed by Paine to Miss. A.E. Scammon and dated in 1894 on the ffep. Pages toned boards lightly bumped and rubbed at spine ends and corners. Near fine. An interesting and attractive Bangor imprint being a metaphysical tract by lawyer and writer Albert Ware Paine 1812-1907. A short review in The Literary World from 1884 describes the premise of the work: "His new philosophy is simply the theory that the spirits of the dead are living about us on every side; having this earth as their local habitation and yet not being trammeled by the limitations of space and time; influencing the living in a myriad ways for good and evil. By this influence he thinks all that is mysterious in human nature necromancy witchcraft dreams second-sight clairvoyance hypnotism genius insanity faith-cures etc. etc. can be explained." This copy inscribed to a Miss. A.E. Scammon of Chicago whom we find mentioned in various religious journals from the time as being chair of the women's committee of the New Jerusalem Church Congress. An intriguing presentation copy. . O.F. Knowles & Co., Printers unknown
