rif. 167954N.p.: N.p. 1990. Archive of approximately 570 vernacular color photographs of the Chicago Auto Show housed in two generic photograph albums with plastic overlays covering every year from 1979 through 1990 lacking 1981. The first photograph album a blue 3-ring binder of 58 leaves with a "Chicago Auto Show Pictures" label on the front board contains approximately 320 photographs housed on the rectos and versos of the leaves and has ink annotations on the verso of the front board noting the years 1979 1980 1982 1983 1984 and "David Hasslehoff" a guest at the 1983 Chicago Auto Show. The vast majority of photographs in this album are 5 x 3.5 inch photographs with approximately 40 3.5 x 3.5 inch photographs. The second photograph album a green 3-ring binder of approximately 53 leaves with a "Chicago Auto Show Pictures" label on the front board contains approximately 250 photographs housed on the rectos and versos of the leaves and has ink annotations on the verso of the front board noting the years 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 and "William Perry The Refrigerator" a guest at the 1986 Chicago Auto Show. The vast majority of photographs in this album are 5 x 3.5 inches with eleven 4.25 x 3.5 inch photographs. A sizable photographic archive documenting eleven years of a devoted fan's annual trips to the Chicago Auto Show throughout the 1980s. The majority of the photographs depict the displayed vehicles with their attending female models and performers as well as the lavish booths and fashions of the 1980s. A documentation of a transitional decade for the US automobile as the behemoths of the late 1970s evolved into the more compact and fuel-efficient Japanese-influenced models emergent by 1990. The Chicago Auto Show was begun in 1901 by bicycle show promoter Samuel Miles and quickly rose to prominence often regarded as the "National Auto Show" by the early 1930s. World War II curtailed the production of motor vehicles for consumers and as a result the Chicago Auto Show was not held between 1941 and 1949. In 1961 the Chicago Auto Show was moved from the International Amphitheatre to its current location at McCormick Place. It is currently the largest auto show in the United States. 1903rif. BK0104Jacksonville Illinois: E. L. Young 1903. Original silver gelatin photograph of a Native American dancer in elaborate performance dress mounted on the studio card of E. L. Young. The sitter is shown in an animated pose before what appears to be a temporary canvas or exhibition structure holding dance implements and wearing ankle ornaments. Mount approximately 4 ¼ x 6 inches photograph 3 x 4 inches. Pencil identification of Young's Jacksonville studio to verso. Excellent. A photograph of an Indigenous American dancer likely made during the appearance of a traveling Wild West or related exhibition company in Jacksonville. Although the sitter has not been identified the Jacksonville location and apparent temporary showground setting suggest that the image records a performer from a traveling show rather than a western ethnographic portrait. In fact Pawnee Bill's Wild West appeared in the city in 1903;1 Pawnee Bill's company was among the largest touring Wild West groups of the period and employed Native performers as a major component of its program. We find no other examples and scant record of the photographer E.L. Young though a surviving cabinet card dated 1900 was offered online at the time of writing. 1 "PAWNEE BILL" Jacksonville Journal Courier October 16 1903 7. . E. L. Young unknown

1719rif. 62577Erie PA: Erie Litho & Printing Co. March 17 1923. Large double atlas folio dual-sided broadside printed on newsprint sized 9.25 x 42 in. photo & woodcut engraving illustrations recto & verso toning to paper some chipping & edgewear paper repairs to closed tears still a G- copy. First edition thus of this advertising broadside for Erickson’s “J.W. Johnson’s Old Reliable Virginia Minstrels World’s best colored show. . . “ which touts their supposed 15 year history and appear to have either been reformed from the “Alabama Minstrels” show which played throughout the West and Midwest from 1905-1914 or simply taken over some of their acts. The contortionist fire king Hi Henry Hunt who appears in this broadside regularly performed with the “Alabama Minstrels” from 1905-1913. The silver voiced tenor A.J. McFarland and Grace Arniot Royal Entertainer depicted on the broadside also appear to have been African-American rather than black face performers. The name appears to have been drawn from the 19th-Century original “Virginia Minstrels” or the “Melodious Ethiopian Band” which featured Billy Whitlokc Dick Pelham Frank Brower and Dan Emmett performing in New York’s Bowery Amphitheater in 1843 and launched the minstrelsy form of entertainment. Emmett is perhaps best remembered as the author of “Dixie” which ironically would become the Confederate States unofficial anthem. Wraps worn especially at edges with wrinkling and several large folds; very good minus. Contents toned with some wrinkling folds and spots of rubbing with one larger tear; very good minus. Overall very good minus. A novelty songbook for the combined Wild West shows of Buffalo Bill and Pawnee Bill Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Pawnee Bill's Great Far East also called the "Two Bills Show." The alternate title on the back cover is Buffalo Bill's and Pawnee Bill's Big Minstrels Song and Joke Book. The inside cover contains "Cracker-Jack Conundrums" a collection of two-line jokes and the back has "A Dictionary of Dreams and Their Meanings." The songbook's cover illustration shows a caricature of a Native American chief on horseback with an inset portrait of "Buffalo Bill" Cody and "Pawnee Bill." Born Gordon Lillie in Bloomington Illinois Pawnee Bill got his start in Wild West shows working as Buffalo Bill's Pawnee interpreter. He launched his own show in 1888 with his wife May Manning which expanded to include the "eastern" element mentioned in this songbook's title with Mexican cowboys such as the popular "Mexican Joe" Jose Barrera and Pawnee performers alongside Japanese and Arab acts. We find no copies of the songbook on OCLC. Will Rossiter unknown
