1920ref. 48854Newport Ky.: The Donaldson Litho. Co. ca. 1920. Swain's Wild West Show An attractive poster advertising one of W.I. Swain's popular touring western shows this one featuring Jesse James who in this portrayal has an African-American as a member of his gang. The illustration shows three men on the right edge with their hands held high while a fourth man next to them weakly drops his gun. On the left side a cocky man in a white shirt presumably James points a six shooter at the men across the room while a blonde woman in a red dress stands with one foot on a chair and the other on a desk also pointing guns at the men. Anomalously in the center of the image through a window a Black man in a red shirt also points two guns at the men on the right while inside the room a Black woman kneels and pleads with the man in the window. Colonel W.I. Swain was one of the most successful tent showmen in the South. He often toured a minstrel show putting on a different performance every night for a week. The shows were continued by Swain's son Kennedy well into the 1940s. Several tears at edges two of them significantly affecting the image. Some chipping and loss along top left and lower right edges also a bit in top right corner. Still a striking image. Good plus. unknown books

1908ref. 53379Seattle WA: Dreamland Seventh Ave. & Union St. 1908. 8vo. 28 pp unpaginated. Numerous photo illustrations plates ads text illustrations. Pink illustrated softcovers minor sheflwear minor rubbig VG copy. First edition of this exceedingly scarce original music program for the 1908 Seattle Automobile Show held at the newly opened Dreamland Pavilion in conjunction with the stopover by the racers in the famed 1908 New York to Paris Automobile race as well as the visit of the Great White Fleet which steamed into Seattle one month later. The advertisements in this brochure include those for Winton Studebaker Locomobile Welch Cartercars Franklins Stearns Pope-Toledo and Packard. The 1908 race was held in the Winter because the organizers originally intended for the race teams to take ship from Seattle land at Valdez Alaska and then drive on the frozen Bering Sea into Siberia and finally overland to Paris. Fortunately the American team discovered a month before everyone else that this could not be done and so they returned to Seattle where the teams were shipped over to Japan and then onto Vladivostok. Although the German Protos car driven by Lt. Hans Koeppen actually arrived in Paris first the team placed second behind the American Thomas Flyer because the Germans were penalized for having shipped their car by train from Salt Lake City UT to Seattle WA. In Yiddish. Title translates as "Issachar Ber Rybak: His Life and Creativity." Published by the Committee for the Commemoration of the Memory of Issachar Ber Ribak A retrospective catalog featuring 32 reproductions of his works from the Wildenstein exhibition released shortly after the untimely death of Issachar Ryback and dedicated to the life and work of the artist. Born in 1897 Ryback emerged as a central figure within the Russian Jewish modernist movement.Born in Elisavetgrad he studied at the Kyiv Art College and the studio of A. Murashko from 1911 to 1916. There he worked alongside other notable artists like Nisson Shifrin Baruch Boris Aronson Alexander Tyshler and Mark Epstein. Ryback's early work focused on documenting Jewish heritage including painting wooden synagogues carved tombstones and objects from Jewish folk culture. His association with Jewish traditions remained central to his art throughout his life. In the late teens Ryback studied cubo-futurism at the studios of Alexandra Exter and Alexander Bogomazov. By 1918-1919 he was teaching at the Jewish Cultural League in Kyiv. He also worked with its Kaunas branch a few years later. In 1921 Ryback moved to Berlin where he joined the expressionist group 'Novembergruppe' and exhibited with the Berlin Secession. There he worked alongside artists like Natan Altman and Joseph Chaikov collaborating with Jewish writers. He designed children's books in Yiddish for Jewish publishers using a neo-primitivist style inspired by Jewish folk art. In 1926 he moved to Paris but died there just one day before the opening of his first major retrospective in 1935. Curated by Daniel Leopold Wildenstein the renowned art dealer collector and scholar this exhibition was to have marked the artist's long-awaited moment of recognition on the international stage. Instead Ryback passed away at the height of his artistic promise as a leader in the cultural resurgence of Jewish art. This paperbound version includes the dramatic cover art lacking on the simple cloth-bound edition.
