rif. 44944Wildly popular pioneering early children's program 1947-1960 that established the genre and became a cultural phenomenon: Kean wrote more than 2000 episodes and invented the show's many colorful characters 1947-55 coming up also with its famed "Cowabunga!" tagline its theme song and every other song sung on the show 97 of them while Smith was its long-time beloved host. Archive of letters and documents relating to copyright infringement issues against those creating unauthorized children's products using the characters in the 1990s and '00s as pursued by the "Howdy Doody" chief writer and host. This fascinating and complex archive contains many hundreds of items -- dozens of original letters ranging from lengthy and meaty legal topics to personal matters to brief notes transmitting newspaper articles and countless photocopied book and other excerpts containing "Howdy Doody" content the majority with handwritten addenda from Kean. Only a few letters and an inscribed 8" X 10" photograph hail from "Buffalo Bob" Smith who died shortly after he and Kean retained a law firm to protect their interests. The vast majority originate with Kean who developed a close personal relationship with his attorney -- who grew up watching "Howdy Doody" and was a fan. This portion includes dozens of letters postcards and notes on personal matters chatting about public appearances and other public recognitions and also including numerous Christmas and greeting cards the occasional "Howdy Doody" product such as bumper stickers booklets etc. Many concern use of Kean's tagline "Cowabunga!" and their efforts to protect its usage. Many of Kean's gossipy irreverent always-amusing letters contain enlightening comments about script writing music composing and other aspects of the "Howdy Doody" show and early television. On August 6 1998 for instance he writes: "The fact is. my job & what I was paid for was to write a script a day exc. Saturday Sunday and when a Balinese new moon and earthquake on Saturn occurred simultaneously for 7½ years. "At some early point just to get away from the typewriter for a while I went to the piano. and wrote a song to fit in with the script -- just for a break in the action. It was an unsolicited extra. Fitting 'em in the storyline was -- on a juvenile Eddie-amateurish level but equivalent to when Richard Rodgers and Oscar H. did same with their songs for OKLAHOMA et al. "Anyway as the years flew or crawled I ended writing 97 songs. I tried to reach 100 but fell 3 short. The 3 I didn't write were: 'Tea for Two' 'Night and Day' and 'Pagliacci.' "The payoff came tho with the RCA albums. "To explain: I always abhorred the cloying namby-pamby typical kind of children's song such as 'Mary Had a Little Clone' or 'Jack and Bill' or 'Hillary Dickory Dock.' So -- I tried to write kids' lyrics of course but not too cloying and importantly music that sounded like pop tunes instead of nursery rhyme stuff." Among the important original legal documents is a December 21 2001 "Transfer of Rights Agreement" in which Smith's executor gives rights to all "Howdy Doody" songs exclusively to Kean as well as much related paperwork and letters from Kean and others on this issue. Another file includes a sheaf of Kean letters and related paperwork concerning issues regarding protecting rights to specific "Howdy Doody" songs. There are retained copies of residual payments and other income statements. This archive also contains numerous retained photocopies of important and confidential legal documents such as a May 12 1987 four-page letter of agreement from NBC Enterprises to Smith spelling out in detail which "Howdy Doody" rights Smith retains and which NBC retains and how much each pays the other and a hefty January 23 2001 U.S. District Court ruling about the ownership of Smith's original "Howdy Doody" marionette after his death. A great many of these miscellaneous photocopies bear original notes and attached notes from Kean to his attorney. This extensive archive sheds much light on "Howdy Doody" creators' efforts to protect their rights to the show long after it had gone off the air but while use of its characters and music in the popular media without due credit proliferated. In a larger sense the archive highlights the continuing broad cultural impact of this landmark show on American society. It's a rich archive that scholars and historians of the television history will find well worth researching. unknown

Signed Michael W. Cowles 1st December 2013." Thus introduced this collection includes an original ticket to the show printed on orange card; the Daily Mail's original story published the following day on May 1 1972; promotional flyer typed on yellow paper; the original BBC Radio 4 Program signed by Peter Sellers Spike Milligan Harry Seacombe writer Eric Sykes performers Max Geldray Ray Ellington Graham Stark film star Michael Caine and two other indecipherable signatures; and significantly a copy of the show's thirty-one page script with rehearsal and recording schedule on blue paper marked up in red and black ink by Michael W. Cowles. The collection beautifully housed in a fleece-lined full black morocco clamshell case spine lettered in gilt. "The Goon Show was a radio comedy show broadcast by the BBC. It changed the face of British comedy and influenced later comedy including Monty Python Eddie Izzard and many more. It was broadcast in the the UK between May 1951 and January 1960. The dignified 'stiff upper lip' attitude still prevailed in the post WWII age but many who lived through the war were more inclined to question the rules and authorities that controlled their lives. Onto this scene burst The Goons with a quick fire irreverent brand of humour that mocked those in establishment and offered a different farcical view of the world. What made The Goon Show different was its attitude. The comedy was edgier than it contemporaries and it used mad characters satire and ground breaking sound effects in a surreal way unlike anything had done before. "The Last Goon Show of All broadcast on 5 October 1972 was a special edition of the famous BBC Radio show The Goon Show commissioned as part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the BBC. It was simulcast on radio and television and later released as an audio recording on long-playing record. This in turn has been re-issued in other formats such as compact disc. A video of the television broadcast was also released on VHS and later on DVD although with some omissions. In early October 2007 35 years after the original broadcast a full unedited version was broadcast on BBC 7 the digital radio channel dedicated to re-runs of classic shows." Wikipedia. "Spike Milligan was the creative force and main writer of The Goon Show however he was often assisted by a co-writers such as Larry Stephens or Eric Sykes. Occasionally if Milligan was unable to writer the show others would script entire show. There were originally four main cast members: Spike Milligan Peter Sellers Harry Secombe and Michael Bentine. Spike Milligan would later be considered by many to be "The grandfather of modern British comedy" due to his work on The Goon Show and subsequent comedies. Peter Sellers would go on to become a world famous comic actor best known for playing Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther movies. Harry Secombe remained a well loved singer and entertainer throughout his career. Michael Bentine left the group after only a few series and before the show reached it's peak of success" Goon Show website. London: Camden Theater, April 30, 1972 unknown books

Some rippling and creasing from poor storage a few chips at margins and one corner two small archival repairs to closed tears on verso but overall still a very good example of this delicate item. A rare poster promoting a screening of early documentary film footage of the Mexican Revolution in progress. No filmmaker or production company is credited. The reference to "Mexico's new ruler General Carranza" suggests a date of 1914 and indeed we located a newspaper reference to a screening in Bakersfield California in September of that year as well as one in Tucson in 1915. American interest in the political upheavals of its southern neighbor was considerable. Although no battle footage is promised recent moving pictures of warships in Vera Cruz harbor and soldiers moving artillery in the field would have offered a novel opportunity for Americans to go beyond the newspaper page to understand historic events as they unfolded. The Tucson showing of this film was even accompanied by a "free exhibit of saddles rifles and sombreros and relics from the battle field." Very good bright broadside. In Yiddish. Title translates as "Issachar Ber Rybak: His Life and Creativity." Published by the Committee for the Commemoration of the Memory of Issachar Ber Ribak A retrospective catalog featuring 32 reproductions of his works from the Wildenstein exhibition released shortly after the untimely death of Issachar Ryback and dedicated to the life and work of the artist. Born in 1897 Ryback emerged as a central figure within the Russian Jewish modernist movement.Born in Elisavetgrad he studied at the Kyiv Art College and the studio of A. Murashko from 1911 to 1916. There he worked alongside other notable artists like Nisson Shifrin Baruch Boris Aronson Alexander Tyshler and Mark Epstein. Ryback's early work focused on documenting Jewish heritage including painting wooden synagogues carved tombstones and objects from Jewish folk culture. His association with Jewish traditions remained central to his art throughout his life. In the late teens Ryback studied cubo-futurism at the studios of Alexandra Exter and Alexander Bogomazov. By 1918-1919 he was teaching at the Jewish Cultural League in Kyiv. He also worked with its Kaunas branch a few years later. In 1921 Ryback moved to Berlin where he joined the expressionist group 'Novembergruppe' and exhibited with the Berlin Secession. There he worked alongside artists like Natan Altman and Joseph Chaikov collaborating with Jewish writers. He designed children's books in Yiddish for Jewish publishers using a neo-primitivist style inspired by Jewish folk art. In 1926 he moved to Paris but died there just one day before the opening of his first major retrospective in 1935. Curated by Daniel Leopold Wildenstein the renowned art dealer collector and scholar this exhibition was to have marked the artist's long-awaited moment of recognition on the international stage. Instead Ryback passed away at the height of his artistic promise as a leader in the cultural resurgence of Jewish art.
